Expanded Scale Process Development of the Electrolytic Production of Thorium From ThCl$sub 4$ in Externally Heated Electrolytic Cells

Description: The commercial feasibility of the electrolytic process for Th production has been demonstrated. The cell produced 7 lb. of good quality metal per hour. A cathode cooling system was developed. The major construction materials, Ni and graphite, were satisfactory. The process yield was 86%. (T.R.H.)

A CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OF A FOOD IRRADIATION REACTOR

Description: The food irradiation facility described consists of: a fully enriched light-water-cooled and -moderated heterogeneous reactor core surrounded by a blanket of indium sulfate aqueous solution; an indium solution system which includes the reactor blanket and the gamma radiators; primary and auxiliary cooling water systems for removal of reactor heat; radiator cubicles into which the food is conveyed for irradiation; and buildings for housing the reactor, radiators, and operations personnel. Sodium Graphite Reactor Quarterly Progress Report for October-December 1955. Section A. Section B

Description: An analysis was made of the nuclear parameters for sodium graphite reactor lattices. These parameters include thermal utilization, macroscopic cross sections, thermal diffusion length, and neutron absorption. Results of all calculations are given in graphical form. Test fuel slugs for the SRE were cycled up to 500 times between 100 and 500 deg C at the rate of 2 cycles/hr. Results are tabulated. The centrifugal casting of U alloy fuel slugs is briefly evaluated. Results of the microscopic exami… more

GAMMA SHIELD DESIGN FOR PRIMARY COOLANT SOURCES USING THE IBM TYPE 650 COMPUTER

Description: A shield design method employing the IBM type 650 computer is developed. All the necessary equations and procedures are presented. Special attention was given to computation methods and the forms and parameters of the equations to attain minimum storage space and calculating time on the computer. The resulting equations apply only to gamma radiation due to the activation of pressurized water in primary coolant systems (6 Mev decay gamma source). The same analysis may be used however for other s… more

"Pin-cushion" irradiation tests of uranium and its zirconium alloys. Metallurgy Program 6.1.1

Description: ABS>An irradiation test of 1/16 in. diameter x 3/16 in. long U/sup 235/ and U/sup 235/-Zr alloy specimens, in the range 2 to 20 wt.% Zr, is described. The small pins were mounted in heat transfer blocks, or ''cushions,'' in such a way that suriace roughening and length changes could be observed, recorded, and compared for five stabilizing heat treatments up to exposure levels of approximately 1% total atom burnup. Addition of 2% Zr was found to be very beneficial, but the behavior of the alloys… more
