The Elimination of Microwave Reflections

Description: Abstract: "The reflections of microwaves from the walls of a plasma-containing vessel are studied. The probable cause of the reflections is discussed, and several suggestions are made for eliminating the reflections from the waveguide in the vessel and particularly from the pyrex vessel wall and copper tubing surrounding the pyrex. Quarter-wave-thick carbon-filled plastics or glasses having a very low vapor pressure room most promising when placed inside the pyrex cylinder. BaTiO3 appears to be… more

Effect of a Decelerating Grid on Current from an Ion Source

Description: Abstract: "A theoretical criterion is given for the conditions under which the ions from an ion source may be decelerated by a decelerating grid, following the accelerating grid which extracts ions from the emitter, without causing a reduction in the current supplied by the source."

Particle Trajectories in Homogeneous Magnetic Field with Linear Time Dependence

Description: Abstract: "Formulas are derived for the trajectory of a charged particle in a magnetic field which is a linear function of time. Graphs of certain functions are presented, by means of which a trajectory with given initial position and velocity may be plotted."

Machine Calculations for the Analysis of the Plane Immobilized Plasma by Trajectories

Description: Abstract: "The analysis of an immobilized plasma by trajectories for the Cartesian case has been adapted to machine calculation and the results of such calculations are described. Their most surprising features is the thinness of the transition layer between a vacuum and a uniform plasma, which is possible without assuming too extreme physical circumstances."

Trajectory-Wise Analysis of Immobilized Plasma Including Electrons. Machine Calculations

Description: Abstract: "The trajectory analysis of an immobilized plasma has been generalized to include the presence of electrons having a far similar radius of gyration and, therefore, fitting readily into the broader scale structure established by the ions. This problem has been adapted to machine calculations and the results for various strengths plasmas have been calculated."

Transient Temperature Variations During the Self-Heating of a Plasma by Thermonuclear Reactions

Description: Abstract: "The possibility of transient temperature variations during the self-heating of a plasma by thermonuclear reactions was investigated. Calculations were performed on an IBM Card Program Calculator. Estimates of the time scale for self-heating were obtained. It was concluded that it would be unsafe to assume that the nuclear temperature is always equal to or greater than the electron temperature in a discussion of plasma instabilities for a plasma with 10 percent or greater tritium conc… more

Microwave Diagnostics in ARC Research : On Determination of Physical Quantities of Gas Discharges in Ion-containment Machines by Measurement of Microwave Propagation Coefficient

Description: This report describes a method used to determine semi-quantitatively the time-varying plasma density in magnetic mirror machines by microwave phase-shift and attenuation measurement.

Magnetic Acceleration of a Plasma by a Rail Source

Description: Abstract: "Two parallel wires close together with an arc between them form a hairpin-type of current configuration which should magnetically propel the plasma of the arc. By the time-of-flight measurements with probes it has been demonstrated that directed translational energies of 290 ev can be imparted to deuterons in a plasma produced by a high-current pulsed arc at the tips of two titanium wires loaded with deuterium. It is believed that three deuterons are actually magnetically propelled."

Gravitational-Electromagnetic Torus Models of the Elementary Particles

Description: Abstract: "A torus model of the elementary particles is suggested in which the electron and proton are made stable by gravitational forces derived from the electromagnetic field. It is suggested that the gravitational forces for the unstable particles, presumably the mesons, are not sufficient to keep the torus from expanding in the direction of its large radius. Rest energy zero can be achieved, presumably for photons and neutrons, when the gravitational energy and electromagnetic field energy… more

An Integrated Miniature Solvent Extraction System for Processing Radioactive Solutions

Description: Abstract: "Because of the radiation hazards inherent in processing large volumes of radioactive solutions by solvent extraction techniques, there is need for a system with small hold-up which can be contained within a minimum of shielding and yet which is versatile enough to be used as a research tool. A system utilizing a miniature mixer-settler has been constructed and its successful operation by remote means demonstrated. The unit is semiportable and employs a number of novel features of val… more

Note on Possible Stabilization Due to Coupling

Description: Abstract: "By a simple illustration it is pointed out that, conceivably, the real coupled character of the general magnetohydrodynamic equations may lead to much slower instability growth rates, if not stabilization, than predicted from the linearized set of equations."

Energetic Neutral Injection into Thermonuclear Machines

Description: Abstract: "A scheme is discussed in which D+ ions would be accelerated to about 100 kev in a conventional accelerator, then be sent through a gas target frmo which about half the ions would emerge neutral with very little scattering or energy loss; the neutral beam would then cross into a magnetic field and part of the atoms would be ionized and trapped by colliding with the already trapped ions. The smallest mirror machine with a central field of 30-40 kilogauss, 2;1 mirror ratio and β = 01 to… more

Note on Table Top Injection : High Energy Injection Inside the Mirrors

Description: "High energy injection into Table Top is discussed for the case in which the ion sources are to be located inside the mirrors in the mirror region. Two typical ion source geometries are considered. maximum time intervals available for injection indicated are on the order of 7 to 25 microseconds."

The Design of a Pulsed Magnetic Field Coil for Table Top 1

Description: Abstract: "A cylindrical coil has been designed for pulsed field operation suitable for use in a model thermonuclear reactor. The coil has an eight-inch inside diameter and a length of fifty-one inches. Magnetic mirrors at the ends consist of double-layer solenoids six and one-half inches long designed to slip over the main coil. Subsequent models of this coil have been fabricated which improved the electrical insulation provided by the bonding materials and the mechanical rigidity of the coil.… more

Influence of Fluorine Substitution on the Properties of Metal Chelate Compounds

Description: From introduction: "This is the first of three articles dealing with the influence of fluorine substitution in the ligand on the properties of metal chelate compounds. Although the primary purpose of this project was to study the influence of fluorine substitution on the properties -- particularly light absorption -- of uranyl compounds, copper chelates were chosen for preliminary study as model substances, because they are easily prepared."
