Teflon Bellows Pulse Generators for Solvent Extraction Pulse Columns

Description: The feasibility of using Teflon bellows as the pulsing device for solvent extraction pulse columns has been previously demonstrated by life test of various sizes of Teflon bellows. This report describes a compact Teflon bellows pulse generator and drive assembly which was designed, built, and tested by the Chemical Development Unit. The pulse generator assembly is suitable for a number of applications where pulse generators are required to pulse solvent extraction columns.

MARK A CONTROL ACTUATOR SHAFT FREEZE-SEAL

Description: Investigations were conducted to determine the mechanical properties of Na sheared in a narrow annulus at controlled temperature gradients and shear velocities. The test fixture consisted of a 1 in. diameter stainless-steel shaft centered in a 1.099 in. ID Type-304 stainless-steel tube. Sodium shear values were found to be dependent upon the temperature and shear velocity at a given test condiiion. Sodium shear values obtained were found to be consistent, wherever wetting of components had been… more

Mechanical Properties at Room Temperature of Four Cermets of Titanium Carbide with Nickel Binder

Description: "Room-temperature stress-strain curves are presented for compression, tension, and shear loadings on four compositions of titanium carbide with nickel binder. Values of ultimate strength, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rigidity, Poisson's ratio in the elastic region, density, and hardness for the four materials are tabulated" (p. 1).

Friction and wear investigation of molybdenum disulfide 2: effects of contaminants and method of application

Description: Report presenting a study using a low-speed kinetic-friction apparatus to show the effects of method of application and contaminants on the lubricating characteristics of molybdenum disulfide MoS2. Friction coefficients for the purified grade can vary from 0.025 to 0.12 just by changing the method of application.

Hydrostatic Pressing of Metal Powders

Description: Hydrostatic pressing was investigated as a method of fabricating long preforms made from uranium powder. A laboratory scale pressure vessel was constructed to evaluate the feasibility of this process. Various metal powders were loaded into flexible molds and subjected to pressure in an enclosed liquid. The high density of uranium caused the flexible molds to distort during filling and after pressing there was a tendency for the compact to adhere to the mold. Methods of minimizing these difficul… more

Effects of Certain Variables Upon the Reactions for Preparation, by the Dry Method, of UF4 from U3O8

Description: The effects of certain process variables on the production of uranium tetrafluoride from U3O8 on the 250 g. (uranium) scale, and smaller scales in a few cases, have been studied. It was found that the initial step (reduction of U3O8 to UO2 by hydrogen) is essentially complete in 15 minutes at 700 degree C. The rate of conversion was shown to be temperature dependent, the greatest increase in rate of conversion occurring in the vicinity of 500 degree C. In the conversion of UO2 to UF4 by hydroge… more

PREPARATION AND CONSOLIDATION OF THORIUM AND THORIUM HYDRIDE POWDERS

Description: A study was made of powder characteristics and cold compacting properties of metallic thorium, Th/sub 2/ and Th/sub 4/ powders produced from Annes billet lathe turnings. In addition a preliminary study was made of the influence of various powder processing and sintering variables on some physical properties of cold compacted bodies. The cold compacting and sintering characteristics of metallic thorium powder were generally superior to those ot the hydride powders. The thorium powder could be co… more

Statistical Study of Overstressing in Steel

Description: Note presenting a study of the effect of overstressing on the fatigue properties of SAE 4340 steel. The effect of microstructure on the susceptibility to reduction in fatigue life due to cycles of overstress was investigated. Results regarding the effect of microstructure on overstressing damage, influence of criterion of failure on fatigue life, and effect of overstressing on endurance-limit statistics are provided.

Investigation of Materials for a Water Cooled and Moderated Reactor [Secret Version]

Description: An investigation of the materials for use in the water-moderated and cooled Aray Package Power Reactor (APPR) operating at about 500°F was made. The available literature was analyzed, and the results of the different investigators were compared and averaged. Twenty different materials, including stainless steels, nickel alloys, Stellites and others, were investigated from the point of view of physical properties, susceptibility to radiation damage, and corrosion resistance. Corrosion rates were… more

Sodium Graphite Reactor Quarterly Progress Report for July-September, 1954

Description: Reactivity calculations have been performed for the steady-state Pu feedback technique outlined in the previous progress report. A full-scale power plant study was initiated, based on sodium-graprite technology. A twin-core power plant is now considered to be the most promising configuration. Several design drawings are given of such a reactor, using slightly enriched U to produce Pu amd electrical power. The thermal neutron flux distribution in a cluster of 6 U rods was measured, and the resul… more
