The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis IV. The Identity and Sequencefo the Intermediates in Sucrose Synthesis

Description: The synthesis of sucrose from C{sup 14}0{sub 22} by green algae has been investigated and the intermediates separated by the method of paper chromatography. It is shown that sucrose is the first free sugar appearing during photosynthesis. It is apparently formed by condensation of the glucose-I-phosphate and a fructose phosphate. A series of radioautographs of paper chromatograms of extracts from plants which have photosynthesized for different periods of time has been prepared. The results ind… more

P Division monthly report, November 1948

Description: This progress report discusses activities at the P Division for the month of November 1948. All piles operated at 275 megawatts (MW) throughout the month except for outages listed under Area Activities in this report and except that F Pile operated at a reduced level during the first half of the month. This operation at reduced level was incident to the leaking process tube reported last month. A total of 81.4 tons of metal was discharged from the piles during the month. The 300 Area canned a t… more

Neutralization of HNO₃ in Redox ICU an IAW Streams

Description: The following memorandum outlines the procedures used on the neutralization of HNO3 in redox ICU and IAW streams, and the factors influencing their choice. The procedures involve a) hexone removal by evaporation in the presence of a retardant, b) destruction of the retardant, c) nitric acid elimination by boiling with aluminum and d) concentration of the remaining solution by evaporation.

An analysis of the airspeeds and normal accelerations of Boeing B-247 and B-247D airplanes in commercial transport operation

Description: From Introduction: "The results of analyses of V-G data given in references 1 to 5 have shown that the flight loads of airplanes operated in commercial transport service are influenced by operating speeds and by forecasting and dispatching practices as reflected in differences between operations during the prewar and wartime periods. The available data are summarized and the flight results are compared with the results of analyses made in references 1 to 5."

Recommendations for numerical solution of reinforced-panel and fuselage-ring problems

Description: Report presenting procedures for solving the equations of equilibrium of reinforced panels and isolated fuselage rings as represented by the external loads and operations table established according to Southwell's method. By using these equations, the stress distribution can be easily determined.

Physics group process report, April 1--30, 1948

Description: The high rate neutron scaler has been removed from service for repair. Consequent study has led to the discovery of a double counting effect. The vacuum system of the vacuum balance is being redesigned and rebuilt so as to obtain a higher vacuum. The vapor pressure of postum was measured with a quartz sickle gauge between 0.3 and 90 mm. of mercury pressure at temperatures between 430{degrees} and 745{degrees}C. The least square representation of the data is the following: Log p = {sub T}{und 53… more

Electronics progress report, December 1--31, 1948

Description: Equipment and supplies are being packed for moving to Mound Laboratory. Work was started on the development of a cathode-follower circuit to match a B-wall tube to its connecting cable. The final report and maintenance manual for the scaler-multiplier are almost finished. The 10 millivolt Speedomax recorder used by Group 3 in the study of electrodeposition potentials has been replaced with a 150 millivolt Speedomax, utilizing two recording points for simultaneous recording of radioactive deposi… more
