Strain distribution and model for formation of eastern Umtanum Ridge anticline, south-central Washington

Description: Umtanum Ridge in south-central Washington is the topographic expression of a complex anticline within the Yakima Fold system in the Miocene Columbia River Basalt Group. The Yakima Fold system, which is partly contained within the Hanford Site, is an example of a layered basalt sequence folded near the surface of the earth. The Pasco Basin stratigraphic nomenclature is used in this repot. Rockwelll Hanford Operations, under contract to the US Department of Energy, is investigating the feasibilit… more

Corrosion of delta plutonium by synthetic sea water

Description: Tests have been performed to determine the corrosive nature of sea water on delta plutonium at 25/sup 0/C. Corrosion rates were determined by measuring the time dependence of mass loss at constant pressure and the time dependence of hydrogen evolution in a sealed vessel. Test coupons were completely immersed in a standard solution of synthetic sea water for periods ranging from 1 hour to 144 hours. Weight loss measurements show that delta plutonium corrodes at an average rate of 5.01 mg/(cm/sup… more

Multibarrier waste forms. Part III: Process considerations.

Description: The multibarrier concept for the solidification and storage of radioactive waste utilizes up to three barriers to isolate radionuclides from the environment: a solidified waste inner core, an impervious coating, and a metal matrix. The coating and metal matrix give the composite waste form enhanced inertness with improvements in thermal stability, mechanical strength, and leach resistance. Preliminary process flow rates and material costs were evaluated for four multibarrier waste forms with th… more

Potential air quality impact of geothermal power production in the Imperial Valley

Description: A regional assessment of the potential impact on air quality of developing the Imperial Valley's geothermal resources for power production is presented. A network of six stations was installed to characterize the air quality and atmospheric transport properties of the valley before development. These measured the ambient air concentrations of H/sub 2/S, SO/sub 2/, O/sub 3/, NO, NO/sub x/, CO/sub 2/, Hg, Rn, and particulates. Wind velocity and the directional variability of the winds were also m… more

Doublet III limiter performance and implications for mechanical design and material selection for future limiters

Description: The plasma limiter system for Doublet III is described. Initially, high-Z materials, Ta-10W for the primary limiter and Mo for the backup limiters, were selected as the most attractive metallic candidates from the standpoint of thermal and structural properties. For the purpose of evaluating the effect of material Z on plasma performance, the nonmagnetic, Ni-base alloy Inconel X-750 was selected for a medium-Z limiter material. Graphite, a low-Z material, will likely be the next limiter materia… more

Analysis of interactions of mechanical deformations and mass transfer on heat transfer from an underground nuclear-waste repository. Final report

Description: A review of existing models identified several effects that may need consideration in further model development. Most of these effects involved coupling equations through variable property values rather than through omission of any significant mechanism. However, it was also shown that more than one mechanism may adequately simulate a given set of experimental data and additional experimental data are needed to establish which (if any) of the possible mechanisms would actually control condition… more

Characterization of the Hanford 300 area burial grounds. Task IV. Biological transport

Description: The characteristics of radioactive waste burial sites at the 300 area burial grounds on the Department of Energy's Hanford Site, southeastern Washington were studied. The potential vectors of radionuclide transport studied were vegetation and animals. The overall results showed a low potential for uptake and transport of radionuclides from the 300 area sites. However, additional methods to control physical and biological mechanisms may contribute to the effectiveness of waste burial practices. … more

Product liability insurance for WECS

Description: Preliminary findings from a sampling of manufacturers indicate that product liability insurance for WECS is still difficult to obtain in many cases. About half of the 21 WECS manufacturers contacted do not have product liability insurance at this time. About one manufacturer in three who has attempted to obtain insurance has been rejected by at least one insurance company. In some instances, although an insurer had offered to provide coverage, the manufacturer found the rates quoted to be prohi… more

Assessment of feasibility, economics, and market potential for a molten salt system at 1000/sup 0/F reheat steam: feasibility, economics, and market potential

Description: As a result of the Advanced Central Receiver (ACR) Phase I systems studies, Martin-Marietta Corporation (MMC) developed a conceptual design employing 1050/sup 0/F molten salt and a 950/sup 0/F/950/sup 0/F reheat turbine. This concept appears to have the potential for providing higher steam conditions leading to higher performance and wider market application. This report presents the results of a preliminary investigation of the system to determine the feasibility of providing 1000/sup 0/F/1000… more
