TWRS Privatization Phase I waste characterization data evaluation for the request for proposal

Description: Radioactive wastes have been stored in large underground tanks at Hanford since 1944. In 1991, The Tank Waste Remediation System (TWRS) program was established to manage, retrieve, treat, immobilize, and dispose of these wastes in a safe, effective manner. DOE believes that it is feasible to privatize portions of the TWRS program. Under the Privatization strategy embodied in the request for proposal, DOE will purchase services from a contractor-owned, contractor-operated facility under a fixed-… more

Iron aluminide-titanium carbide composites: Microstructure and mechanical properties

Description: Composites of intermetallics and carbides (with binder contents less that 50 vol.%) are considered as potential candidates for applications requiring high wear resistance in corrosive environments. Intermetallics, especially aluminides, provide the corrosion resistance, and the high hardness of the carbide phase contributes to increased wear resistance of the composites. In this study, cost effective and simple processing techniques to obtain FeAl-TiC composites, over a wide range of binder vol… more

Transformation plasticity in ductile solids. Final report, August 1, 1988--November 30, 1995

Description: Throughout history, the development of stronger materials has enabled the realization of countless technological advances. Unfortunately, any increase in strength is rarely achieved without concomitant decreases in toughness and ductility: a fact which severely limits the utility of materials such as ultrahigh-strength alloy steels. Typical precipitation-strengthened stainless steels have very little toughness at high strength levels. In the last decade, however, several investigators have repo… more

PUREX/UO3 Facilities deactivation lessons learned history

Description: Disconnecting the criticality alarm permanently in June 1996 signified that the hazards in the PUREX (plutonium-uranium extraction) plant had been so removed and reduced that criticality was no longer a credible event. Turning off the PUREX criticality alarm also marked a salient point in a historic deactivation project, 1 year before its anticipated conclusion. The PUREX/UO3 Deactivation Project began in October 1993 as a 5-year, $222.5- million project. As a result of innovations implemented … more

Consequence analysis of a postulated NaOH release from the 2727-W sodium storage facility

Description: Toxicological and radiological consequences were calculated for a maximum sodium fire in the 2727-W Sodium Storage Facility. The sodium is solid and cannot leak out of the tanks. The maximum fire therefore corresponded to the maximum cross-sectional area of one tank. It was shown that release of the entire facility inventory of 22 Na is insufficient to produce an appreciable effect.
