Field nondestructive assay measurements as applied to process inventories

Description: An annual process equipment holdup inventory measurement program for a plutonium processing plant was instituted by Rockwell Hanford Operations (Rockwell) at Richland, Washington. The inventories, performed in 1977 and 1978, were designed to improve plutonium accountability and control. The inventory method used field nondestructive assay (NDA) measurement techniques with portable electronics and sodium iodide detectors. Access to and movement of plutonium in work areas was curtailed during the… more

Reduction of radiation area project plan

Description: This plan deals with the overall reduction of outdoor surface radiation areas under Rockwell's jurisdiction. Four basic alternatives are identified which will reduce and/or stabilize radiation areas until long-term disposal decisions are made: (1) continued routine surveillance and maintenance; (2) reduction or elimination of effluent discharges; (3) improved site stabilization; and (4) site removal. The four major transport mechanisms at Hanford that are the primary forces for contaminati… more

Theoretical considerations in solid bowl centrifugation

Description: A combination of literature survey and independent analysis determined three relationships for the prediction of the critical (or minimum recoverable) particle size in a solid bowl centrifuge. The relationships were derived based on three different theories of fluid behavior within the centrifuge; (1) laminar film flow (laminar film model), (2) plug flow (Sharples Model), and parabolic flow (modified Sharples Model). The critical particle size for the centrifuge used in Cs-PTA recovery in the C… more

Quality engineering and control. Semiannual progress report, May-October 1978

Description: The standard colorimetric procedure for thorium was improved by using lanthanum carrier precipitation of thorium fluoride, conversion to sulfate, and colorimetric measurement with thoron. Four types of anion-exchange resins were evaluated using breakthrough capacity, elution volume, and the neptunium-plutonium ratios in both wash solutions and ion-column eluates as criteria, and 100 to 200 mesh Dowex 1 x 4 resin had the most favorable separation characteristics. Use of commercially available aq… more

Geohydrological studies for nuclear waste isolation at the Hanford Reservation. Volume II. Final report

Description: A field testing program to provide data for mathematical modeling of ground water flow in the deep basalts of the Pasco Basin was initiated in FY 1978. Tests performed in DC-2 and water level responses in neighboring DC-1 suggest possible leakage between the three lower piezometers in DC-1 and indicate a downward gradient in the upper basalt layers down to 4000 ft, beneath which there may be an upward gradient. A sharp steepening of the downward gradient near the Umtanum Unit suggest that Umtan… more

Vitrification of Hanford wastes in a joule-heated ceramic melter and evaluation of resultant canisterized product

Description: Experience gained in the week-long vitrification test and characterization of the glass produced in the run support the following conclusions: The Hanford waste simulated in this test can be readily vitrified in a joule-heated ceramic melter. Physical properties of the molten glass were entirely compatible with melter operation. The average feed rate of 106 kg/h is high enough to make the ceramic melter a feasible piece of equipment for vitrifying Hanford wastes. The glass produced in this tria… more

Waste Isolation Safety Assessment Program. A brief description of the three-dimensional finite element ground-water flow model adapted for waste isolation safety assessments

Description: Four levels of hydrologic models have been categorized to handle varying complexities and degrees of available input parameters. The first level is for the simplest one-dimensional models having analytical solutions; the second level includes idealized analytic or hybrid analytic models for single aquifer systems with scanty input data; the third level deals with more complex single or quasi-multilayered systems; and the fourth level is for complex multilayered systems. The three-dimensional fi… more

Multibarrier waste forms. Part II. Characterization and evaluation.

Description: The multibarrier concept for the storage of radioactive waste is to use up to three barriers to isolate radionuclides from the environment: a solidified waste inner core, an impervious coating, and a metal matrix. The four multibarrier waste forms were evaluated for thermal stability (volatility), mechanical strength (impact resistance), and leach resistance. This report discusses the characterization of the multibarrier waste forms and compares them to reference calcine and glass waste forms. … more

Role of spent fuel characterization in the development of safe repositories

Description: Objective is to understand the spent fuel performance. In order to do this, we must quantify the spent fuel characteristics at various time intervals during specific field and laboratory tests. This spent fuel characterization is used to identify and describe mathematically the degradation modes experienced during the tests. Incorporation of these descriptions into the more comprehensive spent fuel performance prediction model will aid in the overall licensing of repositories for permanent disp… more

MCDAN: a Monte Carlo computer code for calculating the Dancoff correction factor for spheres and rods

Description: MCDAN is a computer code that uses Monte Carlo techniques to calculate the Dancoff correction factor for arrays of spheres or rods. Neutrons are started from the surface of the sphere (rod) and tracked until they intersect another sphere (rod). The histories of a number of neutrons are statistically combined to give a value for the Dancoff correction factor. MCDAN was written as a tool to verify the accuracy of an expression for the Dancoff correction factor used in a study of the reactivity ef… more
