The Influence of a Precipitation Hardening Heat Treatment on the Hardness of Several Uranium-Molybdenum Alloys

Description: Four uranium alloys containing nominally 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 w/o molybdenum were investigated with respect to their response to hardening by heat treatment. The several alloys were heated at elevated temperatures to secure solid solution, then quenched and reheated at lower temperatures to obtain hardening. The procedure followed the well known industrial practice of solution treatment and precipitation hardening. The results showed that all the alloys could be hardened by a suitable heat tr… more

Investigation of nickel-aluminum alloys containing from 14 to 34 percent aluminum

Description: Report presenting an investigation of nickel-aluminum alloys which were from 14 to 34 percent aluminum by weight as part of a study of the properties of intermetallics. Results regarding the quality of castings, physical evaluation of cast alloys, hot formability of alloys, physical properties of 17.5-percent-aluminum alloy, microstructure of 17.5-percent-aluminum alloy, the casting method, and other properties of the intermetallics are provided.

Effects of chemically active additives on boundary lubrication of steel by silicones

Description: Report presenting an investigation of a method of improving the lubricating quality of silicones by providing chemically active additives. The conventional additives were not effective, but more active materials like peroxide did provide effective lubrication.

Mechanical Properties at Room Temperature of Four Cermets of Titanium Carbide with Nickel Binder

Description: "Room-temperature stress-strain curves are presented for compression, tension, and shear loadings on four compositions of titanium carbide with nickel binder. Values of ultimate strength, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rigidity, Poisson's ratio in the elastic region, density, and hardness for the four materials are tabulated" (p. 1).

PREPARATION AND CONSOLIDATION OF THORIUM AND THORIUM HYDRIDE POWDERS

Description: A study was made of powder characteristics and cold compacting properties of metallic thorium, Th/sub 2/ and Th/sub 4/ powders produced from Annes billet lathe turnings. In addition a preliminary study was made of the influence of various powder processing and sintering variables on some physical properties of cold compacted bodies. The cold compacting and sintering characteristics of metallic thorium powder were generally superior to those ot the hydride powders. The thorium powder could be co… more

Investigation of Materials for a Water Cooled and Moderated Reactor [Secret Version]

Description: An investigation of the materials for use in the water-moderated and cooled Aray Package Power Reactor (APPR) operating at about 500°F was made. The available literature was analyzed, and the results of the different investigators were compared and averaged. Twenty different materials, including stainless steels, nickel alloys, Stellites and others, were investigated from the point of view of physical properties, susceptibility to radiation damage, and corrosion resistance. Corrosion rates were… more
