Correction of the Lifting-Line Theory for the Effect of the Chord

Description: "It is shown that a simple correction for the chord of a finite wing can be deduced from the three-dimensional potential flow around an elliptic plate. When this flow is compared with the flow around a section of an endless plate, it is found that the edge velocity is reduced by the factor 1/E, where E is the ratio of the semiperimeter to the span. Applying this correction to the circulation brings the theoretical lift into closer agreement with experiments" (p. 1).

Methods of analyzing wind-tunnel data for dynamic flight conditions

Description: The effects of power on the stability and the control characteristics of an airplane are discussed and methods of analysis are given for evaluating certain dynamic characteristics of the airplane that are not directly discernible from wind tunnel tests alone. Data are presented to show how the characteristics of a model tested in a wind tunnel are affected by power. The response of an airplane to a rolling and a yawing disturbance is discussed, particularly in regard to changes in wing dihedral… more

Pressure distribution over an NACA 23012 airfoil with a fixed slot and a slotted flap

Description: Report presents the results of a pressure-distribution investigation conducted in the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory 7 by 10-foot wind tunnel to determine the air loads on an NACA 23012 airfoil in combination with a fixed leading-edge slot and a slotted flap. Pressures were measured over the upper and lower surfaces of the component parts of the combination for several angles of attack and at several flap settings. The data, presented as pressure diagrams and graphs of section coeffic… more

Radiator design

Description: From Summary: "A design chart in coefficient form is presented from which a radiator can be chosen with any desired characteristics, whether for minimum power, particular dimensions, or pressure drop for cooling. The chart is a convenient tool for selecting a practicable radiator for any given set of operating conditions. Because the flow is turbulent in the tubes, the chart is for turbulent-flow conditions."

Drag Measurements of a Protruding 0.50-Caliber Machine Gun

Description: Report presenting drag and cross-wind force measurements of a Browning 0.50-caliber M2 machine gun at a range of air speeds in the NACA wind tunnel. The gun protruded through the top of the tunnel wall into the air stream and tests were performed at a variety of angles in order to determine the power required to turn the gun against the aerodynamic forces and the horsepower absorbed in air drag by the protruding gun. Special attention is given to the jacket around the gun, which seems to provid… more

The Design of Jet Pumps

Description: This report shows that by applying both energy and impulse theorems the optimum throat dimension of the mixing nozzle and the best shape of intake can be predicted approximately in a relatively simple manner. The necessary length of the mixing nozzle follows from Prandtl's turbulent mixing theory. The calculations are carried out for the mixing of similar and dissimilar fluids.

New Method of Calculating the Power at Altitude of Aircraft Engines Equipped With Superchargers on the Basis of Tests Made Under Sea-Level Conditions

Description: "The present article deals with what is considered to be a simpler and more accurate method of determining, from the results of bench tests under approved rating conditions, the power at altitude of a supercharged aircraft engine, without application of correction formulas. The method of calculating the characteristics at altitude, of supercharged engines, based on the consumption of air, is a more satisfactory and accurate procedure, especially at low boost pressures" (p. 1).

Drag of Several Gunner's Enclosures at High Speeds

Description: "The drag of several types of gunner's turrets, windshields, blisters, and other protuberances, including projecting guns, was investigated at speeds from 75 to 440 miles per hour in the NACA 8-foot high-speed wind tunnel. The various gunner's enclosures were represented by 1/10 and 1/7 full-size models on a midwing-fuselage combination representative of bomber types. Most of the usual types of retractable turrets are very poor aerodynamically; they caused wind drag increments, dependent upon t… more

Description: "An investigation was made in the NACA 19-foot pressure wind tunnel to determine the effect of various win-gun installation on the aerodynamic characteristics of a model with an NACA low-drag wing. Measurements were made of lift and drag over an angle-of-attack range and for several values of dynamic pressure on a four-tenths scale model of a high-speed airplane equipped with the low-drag wing and with various wing-gun installations. Two installations were tested: one in which the blast tube an… more
