Safety rod latch inspection

Description: During an attempt to raise control rods from the 100 K reactor in December, one rod could not be withdrawn. Subsequent investigation revealed that a small button'' in the latch mechanism had broken off of the lock plunger'' and was wedged in a position that prevented rod withdrawal. Concern that this failure may have resulted from corrosion or some other metallurgical problem resulted in a request that SRL examine six typical latch mechanisms from the 100 L reactor by use of radiography and met… more

Ceramic microstructures and their elucidation by imaging, diffraction and spectroscopic methods

Description: The development and potential utilization of ceramic materials is dependent on a systematic effort involving processing, characterization and appropriate property measurements. The methods of characterization are numerous and it is important to employ the one that is appropriate to the problem both in terms of its information content and the achievable level of resolution. With the incorporation of fine probe forming capabilities in a transmission electron microscope and the development of rela… more

On-line chemical composition analyzer development

Description: The energy consumed in distillation processes in the United States represents nearly three percent of the total national energy consumption. If effective control of distillation columns can be accomplished, it has been estimated that it would result in a reduction in the national energy consumption of 0.3%. Real-time control based on mixture composition could achieve these savings. However, the major distillation processes represent diverse applications and at present there does not exist a pro… more

Validated heat-transfer and pressure-drop prediction methods based on the discrete element method: Phase 1, Three-dimensiional roughness

Description: A computer program based on the discrete element method has been developed and validated to compute friction factors and Nusselt numbers for fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer in pipes with three-dimensional roughness elements. Computational results are compared with appropriate cases from heat transfer experiments in the literature. The predictions were in general in very good agreement with the experimental data.

An Analytic Determination of Beta Poloidal and Internal Inductance in an Elongated Tokamak From Magnetic Probe Measurements

Description: Analytic calculations of the magnetic fields available to magnetic diagnostics are performed for tokamaks with circular and elliptical cross sections. The explicit dependence of the magnetic fields on the poloidal beta and internal inductances is sought. For tokamaks with circular cross sections, Shafranov's results are reproduced and extended. To first order in the inverse aspect ratio expansion of the magnetic fields, only a specific combination of beta poloidal and internal inductance is fou… more

Condensing economizers: Thermal performance and particulate removal efficiencies

Description: Condensing economizers can be used to increase the thermal efficiency of boilers and furnaces. This project has involved a study of these specifically for application to coal-water mixture fuels although the results can be extended to other fuels. experimental studies to evaluate thermal performance and removal of particulates across indirect contract economizers have been performed. The test arrangement incorporates oil firing with the injection of flyash into the flue gas to simulate coal com… more

Application of automated deduction to the search for single axioms for exponent groups

Description: We present new results in axiomatic group theory obtained by using automated deduction programs. The results include single axioms, some with the identity and others without, for groups of exponents 3, 4, 5 and 7, and a general form for single axioms for groups of odd exponent. The results were obtained by using the programs in three separate ways: as a symbolic calculator, to search for proofs, and to search for couterexamples. We also touch on relations between logic programming and automated … more

Operation and radiation resistance of a FOXFET biasing structure for silicon strip detectors

Description: AC-coupled strip detectors biased with a FOXFET transistor structure have been studied. Measurement results for the basic operational characteristics of the FOXFET are presented together with a brief description of the physics underlying its operation. Radiation effects were studied using photons from a {sup 137}Cs source. Changes in the FOXFET characteristics as a function of radiation dose up to 1 MRad are reported. Results about the effect of radiation on the noise from a FOXFET biased detec… more

MHD Integrated Topping Cycle Project

Description: A summary of the work is excerpted here. Final design of an MHD channel for the ITC program POC test has been completed. The channel was designed to be capable of 1.5 MW {sub e} power output and a lifetime of 2000 hours. Emphasis was placed upon durability and reliability. Hence, specific measures were taken to design against channel damage due to electric faults. The life-limiting issues associated with electrochemical corrosion and erosion of gas-side surfaces were addressed by the use of var… more

The RQM triangle: A paradigm for relativistic quantum mechanics

Description: A simple way to relate Lorentz transformations to a finite and discrete model of counter firings is presented. We first abstract from counter firings with finite resolution to rational fraction velocities and a finite step-length. Discrete Lorentz transformations and quantized rotations follow. These are encoded by three integers and a triangle with integer sides: the RQM Triangle. The double slit experiment allows us to observe quantized space steps and measure invariant step lengths for any p… more

Chaotic vibrations of nonlinearly supported tubes in crossflow

Description: By means of the unsteady-flow theory and a bilinear mathematical model, a theoretical study is presented for chaotic vibrations associated with the fluidelastic instability of nonlinearly supported tubes in a crossflow. Effective tools, including phase portraits, power spectral density, Poincare maps, Lyapunov exponent, fractal dimension, and bifurcation diagrams, are utilized to distinguish periodic and chaotic motions when the tubes vibrate in the instability region. The results show periodic… more
