Relationship between swelling and the shear modulus of irradiated metal

Description: In three alloy systems, AISI 316, the Ni-Al binary system, and the Fe-Cr-Ni ternary system, a relationship exists between the shear modulus of the unirradiated alloys and the resultant swelling observed. An alloying addition which reduces the shear modulus will subsequently reduce the irradiation-induced swelling in a solid solution hardened alloy system. The reduction in swelling is thought to be associated with the void nucleation phase of the swelling phenomenon. Thus, relative high temperat… more

Synthesis Gas Demonstration Plant Program, Phase I. Trade-off study report II: gas purification alternatives

Description: Gas purification must be carried out in two stages for economic and technical reasons. The requirements of the first stage can be met by a Rectisol plant by Lotepro/Linde AG, or by a Selexol unit by Air Products/Allied Chemical. The second stage in either case should be a Nitrogen Wash unit. The Rectisol solvent (methanol) is freely available worldwide. Selexol solvent is obtainable only from single sources in the USA and in Germany, but serious supply problems are not anticipated. Selexol solv… more

Cross sections for the Cu(n,xn) and Cu(n,x. gamma. ) reactions between 1 and 20 MeV

Description: Differential cross sections for the production of secondary neutrons and gamma rays from neutron interactions in natural copper have been measured at 130/sup 0/ (lab) for incident neutron energies in the range 1 to 20 MeV. An electron linac was used as a pulsed, white neutron source. Incident neutron energies were determined using time-of-flight techniques for a source-to-sample distance of 48 m. Secondary spectra were determined by unfolding the pulse-height distributions observed in a NE-213 … more

Field determinations of HVdc ozone production rates

Description: The environment near a high voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission line experiences corona effects, including the production of oxidants. Field determination of ozone production rates were made at the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) HVdc Test Facility, the Dalles, Oregon, in fall and winter 1977. A novel micrometeorological profiling technique was used to identify sources of ozone plumes. The results indicate that even during precipitation the atmospheric ozone concentrations from HVd… more

Needed research on the terrestrial effects of coal gasification and liquefaction technologies

Description: The Terrestrial Effects panel discussed the needed direction and techniques for future research in the terrestrial effects of new coal conversion technologies. Panel members concurred on the need for changes in emphasis, approach, and even attitude in environmental research. The following are the basic perceptions of the panel: Our goal is to provide for environmentally amenable technologies in coal conversion and product distribution, especially focusing on pollutants entering pathways to man.… more

Vehicle-miles of travel statistics, lifetime vehicle-miles of travel, and current state methods of estimating vehicle-miles of travel

Description: This comprehensive review of current statistics on vehicle-miles of travel (VMT) in the United States identifies and evaluates sources of national VMT data for highway, rail, and air travel. From available information, VMT statistics by form of travel have been compiled for 1974. Vehicle lifetime VMT is estimated separately for passenger cars and trucks. A survey of state practices in estimating VMT shows that states use one of three methods: (1) the fuel consumption method, (2) the traffic cou… more

Atmospheric trace element pollutants from coal combustion

Description: In summary, analyses have been obtained for approximately 60 elements for sized flyash particles from two coal-fired steam plants. Evaluation of data from the elemental analyses, including the concentration dependence upon particle size, electron microscopy, ESCA, and mass spectrometry suggests a mechanism for formation of the submicron particles in some coal-fired plants. This mechanism involves bursting of larger particles during gas expansion and production of a very large number of very sma… more

Near-field interactions

Description: To approach the subject of high level nuclear waste disposal in deep ocean sediments it is convenient to differentiate between processes occurring in a near field environment, that region arbitrarily defined as lying between the canister surface and the maximum extent of the 100/sup 0/C isotherm, and those which occur at lower temperatures and beyond the influence of intense radiation. A variety of considerations related to the chemistry of seawater-sediment mixtures suggests that about 200/sup… more

OTEC cold water pipe: a survey of available shell analysis computer programs and implications of hydrodynamic loadings

Description: The design and analysis of the cold water pipe (CWP) is one of the most important technological problems to be solved in the OTEC ocean engineering program. Analytical computer models have to be developed and verified in order to provide an engineering approach for the OTEC CWP with regards to environmental factors such as waves, currents, platform motions, etc., and for various structural configurations and materials such as rigid wall CWP, compliant CWP, stockade CWP, etc. To this end, Analys… more

Characterization of nuclear waste

Description: Nuclear wastes which are logical candidates for deep geologic disposal include commercial (spent fuel, reprocessing) and defense wastes. It is expected that the 5250 metric tons of spent fuel discharged through the end of 1978 would increase to about 100,000 tons by the end of 2000. The individual characteristics of each waste type (spent fuel, solidified waste, defense wastes) are described in turn. (DLC)
