Diameter Measurements of Slugs Before and After Prolonged Heat Treatment

Description: Abstract: "Diameter measurements of 25 slugs taken before and after a prolonged heat treatment showed no evidence of differences that would indicate blistering. The average effects of the treatment was different for the various slugs. Large differences in diameter measurements between slugs. Large differences in diameter between slugs and significant differences between indices and positions were found."

Correlation of Chemical Analyses on Graphite Bars and Test Pile Results

Description: From abstract: "The chemical analyses of graphite test bars obtained from National Carbon Company and the analyses performed by the Hanford Works Laboratories Division do not correlate significantly with the test pile results, nor do the chemical analyses obtained from National Carbon Company agree with those done in the Handford Works Laboratories. Chemical results obtained at Hanford on samples taken lengthwise from individual bars correlated significantly with the individual test pile result… more

Directive No. HEW-77

Description: As work on the Columbia Basin irrigation project on the Columbia River is in the initial stages, the question of the effect of this project of the mineral content of the Columbia River has been raised. As an increase in dissolved mineral matter would seem to be likely, it was felt that quantitative estimate of the magnitude of this increase would be important, specifically with reference to the retaining of the demineralization plant at 100-D Area. Accordingly, a study has been made of the prob… more

Tabulation or Ore Reserves and Past Production for the Uranium-Vanadium Region of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona

Description: The tabulations on these pages include all of the known areas in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona having economically important uranium-vanadium deposits of the type which are generally referred to by the terms roscoe-lite and/or carnotite. Though similar deposits are known to exist in other areas they are to be viewed as being little more than mineralogical curiosities.

Degradation of Isotopic Lactate and Acetate

Description: A scheme of glucose degradation has been validated by the use of intermediates of known isotopic composition. In this scheme: glucose {yields} lactic acid {yields} CO{sub 2} (C-3,4) + acetic acid {yields} CO{sub 2} (C-2,5) + acetone {yields} iodoform (C-1,6) + acetate (C-1,6; 2,5), it was found that (a) in the oxidation of lactic acid, approximately 4.7% of the acetic acid was oxidized to CO{sub 2}; and (b) under the conditions prescribed, BaCO{sub 3} from the degradation of Ba acetate containe… more

The Estimation of Heats of Formation

Description: The procedure for estimation of heats of formation of compounds is illustrated by discussion of compounds of several of the elements of the actinide series. The procedure is particularly suited for lanthanide and actinide elements because of the similarity of the ionic radii and types of bonding.

Research Progress Meeting of February 19, 1948

Description: Much of the cloud chamber work has been directed toward obtaining the angular distribution of protons bombarded by deuterons from the 184-inch cyclotron. The observations have been restricted to those protons arising from neutrons of energy greater than 65 Mev. The cloud chamber used for this work is of 16-inch diruneter and employs a magnetic field of 14000 gauss. The chamber is filled with hydrogen at a pressure of 1/2 atmosphere; the vapor used is water and alchohol. Nearly 800 proton tracks… more

On Closed Shells in Nuclei

Description: It has been suggested in the past that special numbers of neutrons or protons in the nucleus form a particularly stable configuration.{sup1} The complete evidence for this has never been summarized, nor is it generally recognized how convincing this evidence is. That 20 neutrons or protons (Ca{sup40}) form a closed shell is predicted by the Hartree model. A number of calculations support this fact.{sup2} These considerations will not be repeated here. In this paper, the experimental facts indic… more

A Generalized Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of the Motions and Hydrodynamic Loads Experienced by V-Bottom Seaplanes During Step-Landing Impacts

Description: Note presenting a theoretical investigation made of the motions and hydrodynamic loads experienced by V-bottom seaplanes during the course of a step-landing impact. In the analysis, the primary flow about the immersed portion of a keeled float or hull is considered to occur in transverse flow planes and the virtual-mass concept is applied to calculate the reaction of the water to the motion of the seaplane. The results are presented in the form of dimensionless curves which may be used to predi… more

A rapid compression machine suitable for studying short ignition delays

Description: Report presenting an examination of a machine developed to study the ignition delay of fuels by means of a rapid adiabatic compression. The essential features of the machine are that the compression is completed in about 0.006 second, provision is made for obtaining simultaneous records of piston motion and cylinder pressure, and the combustion cylinder is unlubricated. An extensive explanation of the components of the machine and its applicability to different scenarios are provided.
