Three Procedures for Creatively Joining Paper and Fabric Surfaces in Painting

Description: During the last several years, my art work has evolved around a developing concept nurtured by a fascination with timeworn relics of the past centered itself around an emotional sensibility toward deteriorating fragmentary remnants of archaeological finds and relics of ancient art, predominately pottery shards and old textiles. I was intrigued and stimulated by the feeling of age and by the beauty of these worn and irregular shapes.

A Musical/Visual Performance: "A Cat on the Piano"

Description: In the visual arts, I was interested in creating patterns with clay, glass, and metal, utilizing the visual elements (line, color, shape and texture). I arranged, rearranged, and distorted the elements until I obtained a fragmented, yet, unified pattern. My visual ideas were rhythmical (gestural) in nature with or without the direct stimulus of music. Concepts originated in my mind with symbols and sounds simultaneously.

Painting Out of Context

Description: I wanted to produce a body of work related to the problem of decontextualizing objects. By challenging the object's habitual associations, I hoped to provoke a new set of relationships for the viewer. I kept a journal of personal information, dreams and events, that might later provide imagery for and insights into the work. My goal in the endeavor was to acquire concision and complexity in imagistic language, a language in which the definite and the indeterminate would coincide very simply to … more

Combining Clay and Light Into Sculptural Forms

Description: This problem concerns the feasibility of combining the elements of light and clay in a sculptural concept of design. The study has determined various procedures of combining the sculptural ceramic forms for the internal inplant of light sources. Specific questions posed were 1. Can the surface decoration be enhanced by external and internal lighting? 2. How does each surface quality, raku, and low-fire salt glaze differ with the interplay of light? 3. In what way may two surface qualities be ap… more

Observation of Two-Dimensional Printed Matter Within Three-Dimensional Formats

Description: It was my intent that the formats work harmoniously with the printed matter, conceptually, aesthetically, and functionally. Specific concerns addressed were 1. How did the format contribute to a clearer understanding of the print concept? 2. How did the functional design and construction of the formats contribute to or detract from the successful unification of print and format? 3. How did the aesthetic design and construction of the formats contribute to or detract from the successful unificat… more

An Investigation of Selected Decorative Ceramic Techniques and Their Relationship to Form

Description: The intent of this study was to construct a group of forty wheel-thrown vessels, comprised of four forms, in series of ten. The surface of these pots was to be enriched through the use of various materials and techniques. These included slip trailing, brushed slip, glaze and over glaze colorants. The decorative theme I pursued was based on abstract floral images. I admire both the ordered structure of plant forms and the slightly imperfect symmetry contained within their various parts. I have a… more

The Neutralization of the Figure Within a Controlled Environment

Description: The questions I have addressed in regard to neutralization were as follows: 1. How important was the figure to the environment? 2. How far could the figure's physical presence be reduced and still contribute to the concepts of the painting? 3. How vividly was the figure presented while still complying with the requirements to meet neutralization? 4. Did color and texture aid in neutralizing the figure, and, if so, how? 5. Did the scale of the paintings have any effect on the neutralization proc… more

Jewelry as Removable, Wearable Elements of a Larger Collage

Description: In developing the ideas for this project, one of the major questions to be addressed was how well this method of combining prints, drawings and jewelry into a single collage would contribute to expressing the themes of intimacy and secretiveness already present in the individual pieces. It seemed that surrounding the jewelry with an environment that shared and repeated the private qualities of these objects would increase the intimacy of the work.

Adapting Reproduction Knowledge and Photomechanical Techniques to Serigraphy for Non-Commercial Purposes

Description: This problem is involved with attempting to answer two basic questions: (a) Can I, a commercial artist, expand and develop as an artist through screen printing and make valid aesthetic statements unrelated to client and/or product? and (b) Can knowledge of reproduction methods and photo-mechanical techniques be successfully utilized in screen printing for non-commercial purposes? Extensive notes in the form of a journal were maintained as work on the project progressed. These notes, combined wi… more

An Exploration of the Words and Their Significance in my Art

Description: The purpose of this project has been to consider the importance of the words in my work. The problem was to focus more clearly on the use of words and their relationship to the visual elements and content. It was hoped also that it would determine how the work is altered by these factors.

A Reconstruction and a Deconstruction of the Visual Equivalents of a Personal (Myth) Language

Description: Questions that arise are: 1. How will the form and content of my current work be affected by a more implicit narrative form? 2. How will the work be affected by: a. source of imagery? b. scale of images and overall works? c. materials? d. intent? Will the intent of my current work change because of a more linear narrative format? 3. Assuming the narrative will change from one piece to another, what will be the effect of placement of images in each work and how will the placement of each work in… more

The Synthesis of a Image Vocabulary Using Found Objects as a Primary Source for Abstraction

Description: The synthesis of mechanical/organic abstracted forms with suggestive power and specific purpose are elements i decided to continue to explore. I wished to make a more careful and systematic analysis of how something man-made could be transformed into a quasi-mechanical abstraction, perhaps a process similar to that in the Mayan art. The purpose of this project was: (1) to analyze how the shapes and forms arise in my abstract images and (2) to devise specific functions for them within the contex… more

The Exploration of the Concepts of Ambiance and Nostalgia in Mixed Media Works

Description: The question addressed in this project is as follows: How, if at all, are nostalgia and ambiance created in my work through the use of the following: 1. color 2. repeated patterns from textiles, wallpaper, and quilts 3. dimension 4. text 5. personal and nostalgic imagery 6. art deco motifs 7. fixed media/found objects. Each of these items will be discussed as it relates to each piece.

Interplay of Forms: Cast, Constructed, Forged as Functional Jewelry

Description: This study involves investigating the combination of delicately cast forms, domed shapes and forged silver into an aesthetic form of jewelry. The specific questions considered were as follows: 1) can the sequential interplay of forms be interrelated from initiation to completion of the study? 2) Can the techniques contrast with one another? 3) Can the scale of the forms be varied? 4) Can the three techniques of construction create body adornment? 5) Can these forms individually or in a combined… more

Gum-Bichromate Photographic Printing as Applicable to the Ceramic Process

Description: The questions answered by this investigation were as follows: 1. Will a clay surface accept multiple emulsions and multiple development processes with little or no loss of detail? 2. Can a gum-bichromate print be accomplished using a normal 35 millimeter negative in an enlarger? 3. What is the effect of different oxides and fluxes on the emulsion? and 4. What is the effect of firing on the experimental emulsions?

An Analysis of Spontaneous and Premeditated Working Methods

Description: For my problem, I proposed to document and analyze the relationships of the spontaneous and premeditated approaches in my work. The pieces that I began during the Spring and Summer 1979 were to be my primary sources of data. Two means were used to document these works and my approaches to them. I photographed the pieces as they progressed up to and including the finished product, and a sketchbook-diary was used to compile ideas and responses.

Ikat: The Combination and Rearrangement of Simple Individual Dyed Patterns into Complex Designs

Description: Ikat is a technique used throughout the world for the surface enrichment of textiles. In Ikat, patterns are dyed into the warp, weft, or both by the use of various resists such as twine or plastic wrapped tightly around a group of yarns. The dyed yarns are then unwrapped and woven into fabric. Instead of stretching an entire warp or weft on a frame to apply resist, yarn can also be measured into small groups for tying and dyeing. These small groups of yarn can be dyed with simple patterns and l… more

A Study Combining Stoneware and Found Objects

Description: The intention of this study is to examine the relationship between fired clay and certain found objects. Working from the assumption that clay, being a natural substance, shares a common ground with certain other natural substances, such as wood, hemp, rock, etc., a primary aspect of the investigation consists of discovering successful combinations of these materials. In each design two subordinate problems were encountered. These were (1) determining the best means of combining and preserving … more

A Series of Self-Portraits Made In Jewelry Form

Description: The problem consisted of creating a series of jewelry pieces in metal which embody the concept of a self-portrait. Each piece in the series has a physical outside and an inside area in its structure which together form a conceptual self-portrait. Each piece was partly preplanned in detail and partly spontaneously executed. The spontaneously executed parts of the individual pieces serve to include the presence of the subconscious self-image. The series when viewed as a whole or as individual par… more

The Fractal Object: Towards a Soluable Space

Description: In this investigation the possibility of a "soluable" type of space and its formal properties was explored. The project took the form of four objects, ranging in size from three to eight feet in total length. The investigation was based on the following questions: 1. How does the form suggest extensions of itself in space? 2. How does color alter the viewer's response to the form? 3. How do color and form work together in suggesting additional elements? 4. In what manner do materials and/or pat… more

The Use of Monoprint Techniques and Sequential Viewing Devices with Spontaneous Landscape Imagery

Description: For the last few years my work has been concerned with an exploration of the landscape image through the use of the traditional printmaking techniques of intaglio and lithography. The images which were produced during this time became increasingly flat and at the same time increasingly spontaneous. At the onset of this project, the images were the result of feelings about and memories of landscape, rather than studies taken directly from nature or from secondary sources. As the desire for spont… more

Bernhardt/Campbell: A Collaboration

Description: The idea for this creative project evolved as the result of communication between myself and Cathie Bernhardt during the first half of 1977. Both of us had been dealing with similar concepts such as reliquary-like containers and the objects contained within them. We also had a congruent approach concerning the use of materials and the manner in which they can be fabricated. These two things resulted in a mutual respect for each other's forms and imagery. We, therefore, decided to explore and co… more
