Program Evaluation: Strategies for Assessing How Information Dissemination Contributes to Agency Goals

Description: A letter report issued by the General Accounting Office with an abstract that begins "Federal agencies are increasingly expected to focus on achieving results and to demonstrate, in annual performance reports and budget requests, how their activities will help achieve agency or governmentwide goals. Assessing a program's impact or benefit is often difficult, but the dissemination programs GAO reviewed faced a number of evaluation challenges--either individually or in common. The breadth and fle… more

Evaluation of a seafloor nuclear power supply and its potential applications. Final report

Description: The seafloor nuclear power supply (SNPS) concept has been proposed by Atomics International (AI) and Lockheed Petroleum Services, Ltd. (LPS) as a source of electrical energy for subsea pumping of petroleum products. It consists of a small nuclear reactor, moderated by zirconium hydride (ZrH) and cooled by liquid metal (NaK), which drives a 3-MW turbine/generator system using toluene as the working fluid. Arthur D. Little, Inc., was selected to assess the technical and economic feasibility of a … more

Quarterly Report of the Solution Materials Section for the Period Ending January 31, 1959

Description: Deposition of U, Cu, and Ni sulfates from dilute simulated HR fuel solution circulated through a heated Zircaloy-2 pipe section is reported. It was found that deposition occurred under boiling conditions in horizontal pipes because of a gas space which prevented wetting in the upper part of the pipe. Other salt deposition studies in an in-pile loop are reported. Effectiveness of oftwo different hydroclone mountings in removing corrosion products from a loop was studied. Results of chemical stab… more

Establishing a Comprehensive Wind Energy Program

Description: This project was directed at establishing a comprehensive wind energy program in Indiana, including both educational and research components. A graduate/undergraduate course ME-514 - Fundamentals of Wind Energy has been established and offered and an interactive prediction of VAWT performance developed. Vertical axis wind turbines for education and research have been acquired, instrumented and installed on the roof top of a building on the Calumet campus and at West Lafayette (Kepner Lab). Training facility for criticality safety

Description: The Lawrence Livermore Laboratory has established a training facility for hands-on instruction in various aspects of fissile material control. Eight hemispherical shells of 93% enriched uranium (approximately 23 kg) are used in a configuration convenient for demonstrating the effects of mass, reflectivity, separation, moderation and poison on the state of criticality. Various thicknesses of clear acrylic plastic are used as moderators in the center of the assembly and as reflectors surrounding … more

Microstructural Changes Accompanying Annealing of Cold-Worked Uranium

Description: Recovery of the capacity for plastic deformation by annealing previously cold-worked uranium plays a key role in the mechanism proposed for the cavitational swelling observed in irradiated uranium. Consequently, an investigation of recovery of yield strength was undertaken for unalloyed uranium and several selected alloys. During the course of this study, variations in the volume fraction of twins in the various specimens of unalloyed uranium suggested that twinning might be a mechanism of the … more

Remote Disassembly of Radioactively Contaminated Vessels by Means of an Arc Saw

Description: The arc saw, a newly developed tool, is a toothless circular saw which cuts by means of an electric arc. Cutting speeds between 20 to 30 cm/sup 2//S and depths up to 45 cm are possible. There is no mechanical contact between blade and work piece, no binding, and no blade breakage. The arc saw will be applied to the rapid and remote disassembly of multiple ton, contaminated stainless steel vessels.

Real-time monitoring of laser surface hardening of ferrous alloys.

Description: An infrared process monitor was used to monitor in real-time the infrared emissions during laser surface hardening of gray cast iron and 1045 steel. The signal from the monitor was correlated with the hardness and case depth of the laser-treated tracks. Test data show that a linear relationship exists between the monitor output DC level voltage and hardness up to the maximum hardness possible and also between the monitor output DC level voltage and case depth. This simple relationship of the mo… more
