Space reactor system and subsystem investigations: assessment of technology issues for the reactor and shield subsystem. SP-100 Program

Description: As part of Rockwell's effort on the SP-100 Program, preliminary assessment has been completed of current nuclear technology as it relates to candidate reactor/shield subsystems for the SP-100 Program. The scope of the assessment was confined to the nuclear package (to the reactor and shield subsystems). The nine generic reactor subsystems presented in Rockwell's Subsystem Technology Assessment Report, ESG-DOE-13398, were addressed for the assessment.

Subsurface marker emplacement test plan

Description: Current plans propose placing subsurface markers within protective barriers to deter potential human intrusion into disposed radioactive wastes. The subsurface markers would provide warning to the digging intruder should surface markers be removed, destroyed, or ignored. This plan sets forth procedures for testing the survivability of the subsurface markers during construction of the barrier. After the tests described herein are concluded, a decision can be made as to whether subsurface markers… more

In-place calibration of moisture monitors

Description: An inexpensive, relatively quick calibration technique, used to calibrate moisture measuring instruments in Rocky Flats process lines is described. The moisture monitors utilize electrolytic cells to continuously monitor the moisture content of argon supply gases. The new method decreases the required down time of the measuring instrument from days to hours.

Thermomechanical processing of 5083 aluminum to increase strength without increasing susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking

Description: 5083 aluminium with 25% cold work must be processed above 215/sup 0/C or below 70/sup 0/C to avoid forming continuous precipitate in the grain boundaries which makes the material susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. Time at temperature above 215/sup 0/C should be held to minimum (less than 30 min) to retain some strength from the 25% cold work.

Shape memory alloy seals for geothermal applications. Final report. Report ESG-82-14

Description: A novel temperature-actuated seal for geothermal applications is under development. This program uses the shape memory property of nickel-titanium (Nitinol) alloys to achieve an improved seal in geothermal downhole pumps. Nitinol flange face seals and pump shaft seals have been designed, fabricated, and tested. It has been demonstrated that the shape memory effect of Nitinol alloys can be utilized to activate and maintain a leaktight seal in geothermal environments.

Description: TRU wastes are those (other than high level waste) contaminated with specified quantities of certain alpha-emitting radionuclides of long half-life and high specific radiotoxicity. TRU waste is defined as /sup 226/Ra isotopic sources and those other materials that, without regard to source or form, are contaminated with transuranic elements with half-lives greater than 20 years, and have TRU alpha contamination greater than 100 nCi/g. RH TRU waste has high beta and gamma radiation levels, up to… more

Low-temperature geothermal resource and stratigraphy of portions of Yakima County, Washington

Description: The low-temperature geothermal resource of portions of Yakima County, south-central Washington, is defined by several least squares linear regression analyses of bottom-hole temperature and depth data. Intra-borehole flow prevents the use of borehole temperature gradients for geothermal resource assessment. Bottom-hole temperature and depth data were separated into fourteen well data groups based on geographic proximity, land slope azimuth, and position within the regional ground-water flow sys… more
