A Catalog of Geologic Data for the Hanford Site

Description: This is the first update of the catalog that was published in 2001. This report catalogs the existing geologic data that can be found in various databases, published and unpublished reports, and in individuals' technical files. The scope of this catalog is primarily on the 100, 200, and 300 Areas, with a particular emphasis on the 200 Areas. Over 2,922 wells are included in the catalog. Nearly all of these wells (2,459) have some form of driller's or geologist's log. Archived samples are availa… more

A Catalog of Vadose Zone Hydraulic Properties for the Hanford Site

Description: To predict contaminant release to the groundwater, it is necessary to understand the hydraulic properties of the material between the release point and the water table. Measurements of the hydraulic properties of the Hanford unsaturated sediments that buffer the water table are available from many areas of the site; however, the documentation is not well cataloged nor is it easily accessible. The purpose of this report is to identify what data is available for characterization of the unsaturate… more

Microstructural Changes Accompanying Annealing of Cold-Worked Uranium

Description: Recovery of the capacity for plastic deformation by annealing previously cold-worked uranium plays a key role in the mechanism proposed for the cavitational swelling observed in irradiated uranium. Consequently, an investigation of recovery of yield strength was undertaken for unalloyed uranium and several selected alloys. During the course of this study, variations in the volume fraction of twins in the various specimens of unalloyed uranium suggested that twinning might be a mechanism of the … more

Optimization of Composition and Heat Treating of Die Steels for Extended Lifetime

Description: An ''average'' die casting die costs fifty thousand dollars. A die used in making die cast aluminum engine blocks can cost well over one million dollars. These costs provide a strong incentive for extension of die life. While vacuum quenched Premium Grade H13 dies have become the most widely used in the United States, tool makers and die casters are constantly searching for new steels and heat treating procedures to extend die life. This project was undertaken to investigate the effects of comp… more
