Production test IP-333-D, Supplement A: Irradiation of two defected UO{sub 2} fuel element assemblies

Description: To permit either the irradiation of two defected UO{sub 2} four-rod-cluster fuel element assemblies during the same operating period, or the irradiation of the two assemblies singly during two different operating periods in KE Reactor front-to-rear test hole 3865. The density of UO{sub 2} in one fuel element assembly is 90% of theoretical, in the other 87%. In both assemblies the fuel element cladding is Zircaloy and the fuel material natural uranium. An artificial defect will be made in each a… more

MOUND LABORATORY PROGRESS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 1960

Description: Development studies were made of methods for producing adhesives and plastics having characteristics superior to those currently in use. Processes are being developed for 230 sources of supply are being evaluated. Research was initiated to determine the density, viscosity, thermal capacity, thermal conductivity, and phase equilibria of plutonium and plutonium alloys proposed as fast breeder reactor fuels. Work is being conducted on the fabrication of plutonium-bearing glass fibers. (B.O.G.)

Pressure Drop Experiments of Upper and Lower Dummy Assemblies for the Experimental Gas Cooled Reactor. Section v of the Fuel Assembly Heat Transfer and Channel Pressure Drop Experiments for the Egcr Research and Development Program

Description: The design arrangement of the Experimental Gas Cooled Reactor contains six fuel assemblies stacked vertically, above one another, in each of 232 vertical fuel channels in the graphite core. Each stack of six fuel assemblies is preceded and followed by a dummy assembly. The upper dummy assembly contains a reflector plug and a latch mechanism. The lower dummy assembly contains an orifice with an adjustable plunger capable of varying reactor coolant flow through the orifice. The pressure drop char… more

Molecular Association and Electronic Structures of Nickel (II)

Description: "A new phenomenon which can, under certain circumstances, account for anomalous magnetic and spectral behavior of planar nickel(II) complexes has been discovered. This is a molecular association of the solute molecules in solvents of low coordinating power. It is shown that the magnetic moment and spectrum of bis(2.6-dimethyl1-3,5-heptanediono)nickel(II), Ni(DIBM)z, dissolved in toluene, are dependent upon both temperature and concentration.

SM-1 Research and Development Program: Long-lived Induced Activity Buildup During SM-1 Core I Lifetime. Task XVIII, Phase I

Description: Abstract: The results of activity buildup studies in the SM-1 performed during Core I lifetime (June 3, 1957 to April 28, 1960) are reported. Data are presented on the extent, nature, and mechanism of the buildup of long-lived gamma emitting nuclides in the reactor primary system. Radiation levels after reactor shutdown are presented, as well as mathematical equations used to account for the observed activity levels. The data have shown that Co60 is the major contributor to radiation levels in… more

Radioactivation Analysis

Description: The development of nuclear reactors and other nuclear particle sources has given the analyst a new analysis method which can be successfully applied to the determination of microgram and submicrogram quantities of many elements. Known as "radioactivation analysis", this method is one in which an "activation" by some type of nuclear reaction is used to produce a radioactive isotope of the element to be determined. Since this radioisotope decays with its own characteristic radiations and half-lif… more
