Coal Air Turbine ``CAT`` program invention 604. Eighth quarter project report and final for the project, August--September 1996

Description: The primary objective of this ``CAT`` project is to complete a conceptual design of this unique new combination of existing technology with cost estimates to show that the ``CAT`` system offers the economic incentive with low technical risk for a plant to be built which will demonstrate its viability. The technologies involved in the components of a ``CAT`` plant are proven, and the integration of the components into a complete plant is the only new developmental activity involved. Industry and… more

Transient studies of low temperature catalysts for methane conversion. Final report, [September 1992--March 1996]

Description: The objective of this project is to use transient techniques to study gas surface interactions during the oxidative conversion of methane. Two groups of catalysts were studied: a double oxide of vanadium and phosphate or VPO, and double oxides of Ni, Co and Rh and lanthana. The objective of the studies involving the VPO catalyst was to understand gas-surface interactions leading to the formation of formaldehyde. In the second group of catalysts, involving metallo-oxides, the main objective was … more

Tank waste remediation system safety structures, systems, and components: requirements and characteristics

Description: Safety Systems, Structures, and Components (SSCs) have been identified from hazard and accident analyses. These analyses were performed to support the Tank Waste Remediation System (TWRS) Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) and Basis for Interim Operation (BIO). The text identifies and evaluates the SSCs, and their supporting SSC`s, to show that they either prevent the occurrence of the accident or, mitigate the consequences of the accident to below the acceptance guidelines. The requirements f… more

Relating x-ray attenuation measurements to water content and distribution in SB-15D core

Description: Making improved estimates of the water content of The Geysers reservoir is fundamental to efficient and economic long term production of steam power from the resource. A series of coordinated physical properties measurements form core recovered from the SB-15D, reported in this volume in a series of papers, have been made to better understand water storage and to relate water content and distribution to observable geophysical properties such as electrical conductivity and seismic velocities. A … more

TWRS privatization phase I site development engineering study

Description: The DOE-RL is pursuing a new business strategy of hiring private contractors for treatment of Hanford Site tank wastes. This strategy is called `privatization` and includes design, permitting, construction, operation and deactivation of facilities for tank waste treatment. The TWRS Privatization Infrastructure Project consists of several sub-projects which will provide key services needed to support the privatization mission. One sub-project is to develop the selected site for the privatization… more

Report on enhancing young scholars in science and technology the Center for Excellence in Education

Description: The present stock and flow of highly talented young persons engaged in the global discovery and application of science and technology are critical to the future pace of innovation. Historically, the world`s largest reservoirs of scientists and engineers have been in the Western economies. Overtime, however, Asia has begun to build equivalent pools of scientists and engineers among their university graduates. According to 1993 data from the National Science Foundation and the UNESCO World Scienc… more

Subcontract 8699K0013-9Q. Final progress report, July 19, 1993--July 18, 1996

Description: A major activity in the subcontract was to provide theoretical and analytical support for experimental activities at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Reflecting changes in the laboratory organization, work was performed initially for Group P-14 and latter for the Agex Program Office. A second task was to develop, to supply and to support software in the areas of hydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics and electromagnetics. The programs are compatible with personal computers and allow simulations of … more

Temperature effects on chemical structure and motion in coal. Final report

Description: The objective of this project was to apply recently developed, state-of-the-art nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques to examine in situ changes in the chemical structure and molecular/macromolecular motion in coal as the temperature is increased above room temperature. Although alterations in the chemical structure of coal have been studied previously by {sup 13}C NMR, using quenched samples, the goal of this project was to examine these chemical structural changes, and changes in molecu… more

Clean salt process final report

Description: A process has been demonstrated in the laboratory for separating clean, virtually non-radioactive sodium nitrate from Hanford tank waste using fractional crystallization. The name of the process is the Clean Salt Process. Flowsheet modeling has shown that the process is capable of reducing the volume of vitrified low activity waste (LAW) by 80 to 90 %. Construction of the Clean Salt processing plant would cost less than $1 10 million, and would eliminate the need for building a $2.2 billion lar… more
