Training facility for criticality safety

Description: The Lawrence Livermore Laboratory has established a training facility for hands-on instruction in various aspects of fissile material control. Eight hemispherical shells of 93% enriched uranium (approximately 23 kg) are used in a configuration convenient for demonstrating the effects of mass, reflectivity, separation, moderation and poison on the state of criticality. Various thicknesses of clear acrylic plastic are used as moderators in the center of the assembly and as reflectors surrounding … more

The Start Of Ebullition In Quiescent, Yield-Stress Fluids

Description: Non-Newtonian rheology is typical for the high-level radioactive waste (HLW) slurries processed in the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP). Hydrogen and other flammable gases are generated in the aqueous phase by radiolytic and chemical reactions. HLW slurries have a capacity for retaining gas characterized by the shear strength holding the bubbles still. The sizes and degassing characteristics of flammable gas bubbles in the HLW slurries expected to be processed by the … more

Y-12 Development Division technical progress report, period ending October 1, 1989

Description: Shallow land burial in Bear Creek Burial Ground (BCBG) of depleted uranium and uranium alloy chips was discontinued. These materials are now being processed at the Uranium Chip Oxidation Facility (UCOF). Some of the depleted uranium chips, formerly taken to BCBG, were oxidized in 5-, 10-, 15-, and 20-lb batches to determine the optimal processing weight that would reduce the overall flameout frequency to one that complies with UCOF safety documentation. The goal of the Y-12 Plant Development Di… more

Draft Site Treatment Plan (DSTP), Volumes I and II

Description: Site Treatment Plans (STP) are required for facilities at which the DOE generates or stores mixed waste. This Draft Site Treatment Plan (DSTP) the second step in a three-phase process, identifies the currently preferred options for treating mixed waste at the Savannah River Site (SRS) or for developing treatment technologies where technologies do not exist or need modification. The DSTP reflects site-specific preferred options, developed with the state`s input and based on existing available in… more
