Stability of bodies of revolution having fineness ratios smaller than 1.0 and having rounded fronts and blunt bases

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of the stability of several bodies of revolution having fineness ratios smaller than 1.0 and having rounded fronts and blunt bases. Free-drop tests were made in the vertical 20-foot free-spinning tunnel to determine the behavior of the various bodies in descent.

Investigation at Transonic Speeds of a Forward-Located Underslung Air Inlet on a Body of Revolution

Description: Report presenting an investigation in the transonic tunnel to determine the flow phenomena, pressure recovery, and external drag of a forward-located underslung air scoop mounted on a basic body of revolution with fineness ratio 11, which when cut off to provide an exit for the internal flow had a fineness ratio of 8. Results regarding the surface pressure distributions, drag, lift and pitching moment, and flow into the inlet on the modified model are provided.

Control Hinge-Moment and Effectiveness Characteristics of a Horn-Balanced, Flap-Type Control on a 55 Degree Sweptback Triangular Wing of Aspect Ratio 3.5 at Mach Numbers of 1.41, 1.62, and 1.96

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of a horn-balanced, flap-type control mounted on a 55 degree sweptback, triangular wing of aspect ratio 3.5 conducted in the 9- by 12-inch supersonic blowdown tunnel. The control exhibited nonlinear variations of hinge moment with both angle of attack and deflection at all Mach numbers. Results regarding control characteristics of basic configuration, effects of control trailing-edge bluntness on control characteristics, and wing characteristics are provid… more

Method for calculating the rolling and yawing moments due to rolling for unswept wings with or without flaps or ailerons by use of nonlinear section lift data

Description: From Summary: "The methods of NACA reports 865 and 1090 have been applied to the calculation of the rolling-moment and yawing-moment coefficients due to rolling for unswept wings with or without flaps or ailerons. The methods are based on lifting-line theory and allow the use of nonlinear section lift data. The method presented in this report permits calculations to be made somewhat beyond maximum lift for wings having no twist or continuous twist and employing airfoil sections which do not dis… more

Autoclave Testing of Mechanically Jacketed Thorium Slugs In Water

Description: Water corrosion tests on mechanically jacketed and pinholed thorium slugs show that these slugs fail in a manner similar to that observed for mechanically jacketed and tested uranium slugs. The proposed mechanism for the water corrosion of these jacketed slugs is analogous to the water corrosion mechanism of jacketed uranium slugs presented in the project lecture. A bare thorium slug appeared to be more resistant to corrosion by water than a mechanically jacketed slug during the first half of t… more
