CARRIER/CASK HANDLING SYSTEM DESCRIPTION DOCUMENT

Description: The Carrier/Cask Handling System receives casks on railcars and legal-weight trucks (LWTs) (transporters) that transport loaded casks and empty overpacks to the Monitored Geologic Repository (MGR) from the Carrier/Cask Transport System. Casks that come to the MGR on heavy-haul trucks (HHTs) are transferred onto railcars before being brought into the Carrier/Cask Handling System. The system is the interfacing system between the railcars and LWTs and the Assembly Transfer System (ATS) and Caniste… more

Acoustically-driven microfluidic systems

Description: We have demonstrated a non-contact method of concentrating and mixing particles in a plastic microfluidic chamber employing acoustic radiation pressure. A flaw cell package has also been designed that integrates liquid sample interconnects, electrical contacts and a removable sample chamber. Experiments were performed on 1, 3, 6, and 10 {micro}m polystyrene beads. Increased antibody binding to a solid-phase substrate was observed in the presence of acoustic mixing due to improve mass transport.

CANISTER TRANSFER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION DOCUMENT

Description: The Canister Transfer System receives transportation casks containing large and small disposable canisters, unloads the canisters from the casks, stores the canisters as required, loads them into disposal containers (DCs), and prepares the empty casks for re-shipment. Cask unloading begins with cask inspection, sampling, and lid bolt removal operations. The cask lids are removed and the canisters are unloaded. Small canisters are loaded directly into a DC, or are stored until enough canisters a… more

Feasibility of the utilization of BNCT in the fast neutron therapy beam at Fermilab

Description: The Neutron Therapy Facility at Fermilab has treated cancer patients since 1976. Since then more than 2,300 patients have been treated and a wealth of clinical information accumulated. The therapeutic neutron beam at Fermilab is produced by bombarding a beryllium target with 66 MeV protons. The resulting continuous neutron spectrum ranges from thermal to 66 MeV in neutron energy. It is clear that this spectrum is not well suited for the treatment of tumors with boron neutron capture therapy (BN… more

Diffractive dijet production at the Tevatron: CDF Results

Description: The authors report a measurement of the diffractive structure function of the antiproton for dijet events produced in association with a leading antiproton in {anti p}p collisions at {radical}(s) = 1800 GeV. Comparing their results with expectations based on parton densities extracted by the H1 Collaboration from diffractive deep inelastic scattering at the DESY ep collider HERA, the authors find a severe breakdown of QCD factorization.

Beam-beam simulations for separated beams in the LHC

Description: We present beam-beam simulation results from a strong-strong gaussian code for separated beams for the LHC. We focus on the possible detrimental effects of the beam-beam interaction in cases when the beams are: (1) periodically swept about each other, and (2) brought into collision from separated orbits. For 10{sup 5}-turn runs we do not see significant emittance blowup for nominal bunch intensities, although there is significant blowup at intensities 10 times the nominal value.

Explicit SO(10) supersymmetric grand unified model

Description: A complete set of Higgs and matter superfields is introduced with well-defined SO(10) properties and U(1) x Z{sub 2} x Z{sub 2} family charges from which the Higgs and Yukawa superpotentials are constructed. The Higgs fields solve the doublet-triplet splitting problem, while the structures of the four Dirac fermion mass matrices obtained involve just six effective Yukawa operators. The right-handed Majorana matrix arises from one Higgs field coupling to several pairs of superheavy conjugate neu… more
