PUREX storage tunnels waste analysis plan

Description: Washington Administrative Code 173-303-300 requires that a facility develop and follow a written waste analysis plan which describes the procedures that will be followed to ensure that its dangerous waste is managed properly. This document covers the activities at the PUREX Storage Tunnels used to characterize and designate waste that is generated within the PUREX Plant, as well as waste received from other on-site sources.

FY 1996 solid waste integrated life-cycle forecast container summary volume 1 and 2

Description: For the past six years, a waste volume forecast has been collected annually from onsite and offsite generators that currently ship or are planning to ship solid waste to the Westinghouse Hanford Company`s Central Waste Complex (CWC). This document provides a description of the containers expected to be used for these waste shipments from 1996 through the remaining life cycle of the Hanford Site. In previous years, forecast data have been reported for a 30-year time period; however, the life-cyc… more

Final Report, IUT - B291527, January 1996 - March 1997

Description: The following note investigates scaling the 11.4-GHz TBNLC design of a relativistic klystron two-beam accelerator for a 30-GHz, 50-bunch accelerator design. We will refer to this point design as the RK-CLIC. We do not expect that the design will be optimal, but offer it as a starting point for discussions. In this memo, we begin with a general description of the RK-CLIC and drive beam dynamics, discuss required changes to major components, estimate the efficiency of wall plug to microwave power… more

Westinghouse Hanford Company special nuclear material vault storage study

Description: Category 1 and 2 Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) require storage in vault or vault type rooms as specified in DOE orders 5633.3A and 6430.1A. All category 1 and 2 SNM in dry storage on the Hanford site that is managed by Westinghouse Hanford Co (WHC) is located in the 200 West Area at Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP) facilities. This document provides current and projected SNM vault inventories in terms of storage space filled and forecasts available space for possible future storage needs.

Audit of work force restructuring at the Fernald Environmental Management Project

Description: The Department of Energy (Department) restructured its work force at the Fernald Environmental Management Project (Fernald Project) to reduce staffing levels and to modify the mix of workers` skills in response to budget cuts, facility closures, and changes in the Fernald Project`s mission. The objective of this audit was to determine whether the work force restructurings were effective in reducing staffing levels and in changing the mix of workers` skills. As of September 30, 1995, the restruc… more

An asymmetric {mu} - p collider as a quark structure microscope: Luminosity consideration

Description: An asymmetric muon-proton collider is proposed as an instrument for possible quark structure search. Energy of proton beam is supposed to be some 5-6 times of muon energy. Estimated luminosity of the collider with two rings-the Tevatron accelerator and {mu}-ring-is found to be of the order of 10{sup 33} s{sup {minus}1} cm{sup {minus}2}.

Summary audit report on lessons learned from the Superconducting Super Collider Project

Description: In October 1993, the Congress decided to terminate the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) project after expending about $1.57 billion on the project. While both internal and external factors contributed to the demise of the project, its cancellation offers the Department a unique opportunity to analyze what went wrong, correct the mistakes, and apply the lessons learned to future large-scale projects.

Stability of eutectic interface during directional solidification

Description: Directional solidification of eutectic alloys shows different types of eutectic morphologies. These include lamellar, rod, oscillating and tilting modes. The growth of these morphologies occurs with a macroscopically planar interface. However, under certain conditions, the planar eutectic front becomes unstable and gives rise to a cellular or a dendritic structure. This instability leads to the cellular/dendritic structure of either a primary phase or a two-phase structure. The objective of thi… more

The crystal and molecular structure of azatranes: Azavanadatran (Z=t-Bu), monoazasilatrane (Z=H), azalithatrane (Z=Clo*4*), azaphosphatrane (Z=Me), azagermatrane (Z=t-Bu) and Azaalumatran (Z=nothing)

Description: The crystal and molecular structures of azatranes have been extensively studied for a variety of M atoms. Dynamical x-ray diffraction from an icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn quasicrystal

Description: Primary extinction effects in diffraction from single grains of Al-Pd- Mn, and presumably many other FCI alloys, may be significant and should be corrected for prior to use of diffraction data in structural determinations. Probes based on dynamical diffraction effects, such as x-ray standing wave fluorescence, multiple beam interference, and x-ray transmission topographs, may now be used to study the bulk and surface structure of some quasicrystals. The observation of dynamical diffraction from… more

Appalachian Clean Coal Technology Consortium: Technical progress report, October 1--December 31, 1995

Description: In the dewatering project, two different approaches are taken. One approach involves displacing the water on the surface of coal by a hydrophobic substance that can be readily recovered and recycled. This novel concept, referred to as the Hydrophobic Dewatering (HD) process, is based on improved understanding of the surface chemistry of dewatering. The other approach is to use disposable dewatering substances in mechanical dewatering. The objectives of the proposed work are (1) to test the HD p… more
