Experimental results of the active deflection of a beam from a kicker system

Description: A high current kicker has been designed and tested on the ETA-II beam line. A bias dipole which surrounds the kicker acts to deflect the beam in the DC mode. High voltage pulsers (10kV) with fast rise times (10ns) are connected to the internal strip lines of the kicker. They are used to manipulate beams dynamically. Camera photos which show the switching of the beam from one position to another will be presented. Beam bug measurements of beam-induced as well as active steering will be shown. Th… more

Simulation of high-average power windows for accelerator production of tritium

Description: Development of a robust, high-average-power (210 kW, CW) microwave transmission line system for the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) facility is a stringent engineering and operational requirement. One key component in this RF transmission system is the vacuum barrier window. The requirement of high-power handling capability coupled to the desirability of good mean time to failure characteristics can be treated substantially with a set of microwave, thermal-structural, and Weibull analys… more

Core testing of zinc/air refuelable battery modules

Description: We are developing a refuelable zinc/air battery (6-cells) for evaluation under the five USABC `core` test protocols. In the first half of the two year project ($1OOK, FY1997), an advanced refuelable design was developed, fabricated and tested at power levels up to 415 W. Performance matched or exceeded that of earlier multicell systems. A computer program was developed for automated data acquisition and drive cycle simulation. Small mockup cells (80 cm 2) were constructed for rapid testing of c… more

Aging effects on explosive performance

Description: Bigplate and the Cylinder Test have been pushed into baseline LX-l 7 measurements. The non-ideality of LX-11 and the need for a time-dependent Equation of State has been shown. The first calculations of Equilibrium CHEETAH (TTL-06) linked to the 2-D code HEMP were made. An unexpected time lag not predicted by the code was seen in Bigplate. Extensive metal spa11 was also seen.

Analysis of SX farm leak histories -- Historical leak model (HLM)

Description: This report uses readily available historical information to better define the volume, chemical composition, and Cs-137/Sr-90 amounts for leaks that have occurred in the past for tanks SX-108, SX-109, SX-111, and SX-112. In particular a Historical Leak Model (HLM) is developed that is a month by month reconciliation of tank levels, fill records, and calculated boil-off rates for these tanks. The HLM analysis is an independent leak estimate that reconstructs the tank thermal histories thereby de… more

Magnetic excitations in the S = {1/2} quasi-one-dimensional magnet Sr{sub 14{minus}x}Ca{sub x}Cu{sub 24}O{sub 41}

Description: Neutron scattering experiments have been performed on Sr{sub 14{minus}x}Ca{sub x}Cu{sub 24}O{sub 41} (x = 3 and 6), which consists of CuO{sub 2} chains and CuO{sub 2}O{sub 3} ladders, in order to study the effect of Ca substitution on the dimerized state in the chains. The Ca substitution broadens the excitation peak although the excitation energy is almost unchanged. The effects of Ca and Y substitution on the dimerized state are compared.

Laboratory laser acceleration and high energy astrophysics: {gamma}-ray bursts and cosmic rays

Description: Recent experimental progress in laser acceleration of charged particles (electrons) and its associated processes has shown that intense electromagnetic pulses can promptly accelerate charged particles to high energies and that their energy spectrum is quite hard. On the other hand some of the high energy astrophysical phenomena such as extremely high energy cosmic rays and energetic components of {gamma}-ray bursts cry for new physical mechanisms for promptly accelerating particles to high ener… more

Study of the transverse beam motion in the DARHT Phase II accelerator

Description: The accelerator for the second-axis of the Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) facility will accelerate a 4-kA, 3-MeV, 2--µs long electron current pulse to 20 MeV. The energy variation of the beam within the flat-top portion of the current pulse is (plus or equal to) 0.5%. The performance of the DARHT Phase II radiographic machine requires the transverse beam motion to be much less than the beam spot size which is about 1.5 mm diameter on the x-ray converter. In general, the leadin… more

LDUA software custodian`s notebook

Description: This plan describes the activities to be performed and controls to be applied to the process of specifying, obtaining, and qualifying the control and data acquisition software for the Light Duty Utility Arm (LDUA) System. It serves the purpose of a software quality assurance plan, a verification and validation plan, and a configuration management plan. This plan applies to all software that is an integral part of the LDUA control and data acquisition system, that is, software that is installed … more

Controlling backstreaming ions from X-ray converter targets with time varying final focusing solenoidal lens and beam energy variation

Description: Backstreaming ions emitted from an x-ray converter hit by a tightly focused intense electron beam can form an ion focusing channel and over-focus the electron beam. As the ions move upstream in time, the net focusing strength increases. The final beam spot size on the target would then change in time and typically be larger than intended. We have developed a model to estimate the backstreaming ions neutralization factor in a potential sheath near the target surface and away from the sheath. Pe… more

Trapping backstreaming ions from an x-ray converter using an inductive cell

Description: High current electron beams have been used as x-ray drivers for x-ray radiography. Typically, several thousand amperes of electron beam current at 20 MeV is focused to a millimeter spot size on a x-ray converter. Within a single pulse, the heating of the target by the electron beam will lead to rapid desorption of surface contaminants. The space charge potential of the electron beam will pull ions out of this plasma layer upstream into the beam. These backstreaming ions can act as a focusing le… more

Final Report: Medium Energy Measurements of N-N Parameter, April 1, 1994 - September 30, 1996

Description: Our research program had four main thrusts, only one of which can be considered as measurements of N-N parameters: (1) Finishing the data analyses associated with recent LAMPF and TRIUMPF N-N experiments, whose overall purpose has been the determination of the nucleon-nucleon amplitudes, both for isospin 0 and 1 at medium energies; (2) continuing work on BNL E871, a search for rare decay modes of the KL; (3) work on the RHIC-STAR project, an experiment to create and study a quark gluon plasma a… more
