Tobacco Control: Enforcement and Effectiveness of Federal and State Youth Access Laws

Description: This report reviews recent efforts to limit youth access to cigarettes through enforcement of federal and state laws prohibiting tobacco sales to minors. Under the federal Synar Amendment, states must conduct compliance checks and enforce their minimum age-of-sale laws or risk losing block grant funds

Self-consistent 3D simulations of longitudinal halo in rf -linacs

Description: In order to prevent activation of the beam pipe walls and components of a high power ion accelera- tor: beam loss must be minimized. Here we present self-consistent, 3D particle-in-cell simulations of longi- tudinally mismatched beams including the effects of rf non-linearities using parameters based on the Acceler- ator Production of Tritium linac design. In particular, we explore the evolution of the longitudinal halo distri- bution, i.e., the distribution of particles in longitudinal phase s… more

Engineering the National Ignition Facility

Description: The engineering team of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has developed a highly optimized hardware design that satisfies stringent cost, performance and schedule requirements. After a 3-year effort, the design will culminate at the end of FY98 with the completion of major Title II design reviews. Every element of the facility from optic configuration, facility layout and hardware specifications to material selection, fabrication techniques and part tolerancing has been examined to assure th… more

Active and passive computed tomography mixed waste focus area final report

Description: The Mixed Waste Focus Area (MWFA) Characterization Development Strategy delineates an approach to resolve technology deficiencies associated with the characterization of mixed wastes. The intent of this strategy is to ensure the availability of technologies to support the Department of Energy s (DOE) mixed waste low-level or transuranic (TRU) contaminated waste characterization management needs. To this end the MWFA has defined and coordinated characterization development programs to ensure th… more

Long Pulse Fusion Physics Experiments without Superconducting Electromagnets

Description: Long-pulse fusion physics experiments can be performed economically via resistive electromagnets designed for thermally steady-state operation. Possible fusion experiments using resistive electromagnets include long-pulse ignition with deuterium-tritium fuel. Long-pulse resistive electromagnets are alternatives to today's delicate and costly superconductors. At any rate, superconducting technology is now evolving independent of fusion, so near-term superconducting experience may not ultimately … more

The FB-Line and F-Canyon HAN/Nitric Acid Decomposition Study

Description: Separations requested SRTC study the autocatalytic decomposition of the hydroxylamine nitrate which may occur in the presence of concentrated nitric acid with respect to making-up cold feed solutions. The data obtained from this study will provide Separations an envelope within which safe operations can be conducted.

Heavy ion fusion experiments at LBNL and LLNL

Description: The long-range goal of the US Heavy Ion Fusion (HIF) program is to develop heavy ion accelerators capable of igniting inertial fusion targets to generate fusion energy for electrical power production. Accelerators for heavy ion fusion consist of several subsystems: ion sources, injectors, matching sections, combiners, induction acceleration sections with electric and magnetic focusing, beam compression and bending sections, and a final-focus system to focus the beams onto the target. We are cur… more

Emittance growth from bend straight transitions for beams approaching thermal equilibrium

Description: In certain applications such as heavy ion fusion, intense beams with large space charge tune depressions will be transferred from linear transport sections into bent, transport, sections. In some. designs, such as recircutating induction accelerators, transport. through bends will occur over thousands of betatron periods and in some driver designs the final transports through a bend will occur over tens of betatron periods. Over such distances, non-linear space charge forces are expected to pro… more

REDUCTION OF INHERENT MERCURY EMISSIONS IN PC COMBUSTION

Description: Mercury emission compliance is one of the major potential challenges raised by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Simple ways of controlling emissions have not been identified. The variability in the field data suggests that inherent mercury emissions may be reduced if the source of this inherent capture can be identified and controlled. The key mechanisms appear to involve the oxidation of the mercury to Hg{sup 2}, generally producing the more reactive HgCl{sub 2}, followed by its capture by c… more

Improved Magnetic Fusion Energy Economics via Massive Resistive Electromagnets

Description: Abandoning superconductors for magnetic fusion reactors and instead using resistive magnet designs based on cheap copper or aluminum conductor material operating at "room temperature" (300 K) can reduce the capital cost per unit fusion power and simplify plant operations. By increasing unit size well beyond that of present magnetic fusion energy conceptual designs using superconducting electromagnets, the recirculating power fraction needed to operate resistive electromagnets can be made as clo… more

Development of nondestructive evaluation methods for structural ceramics.

Description: During the past year, the focus of our work on nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods was on the development and application of these methods to technologies such as ceramic matrix composite (CMC) hot-gas filters, CMC high-temperature heat exchangers, and CMC ceramic/ceramic joining. Such technologies are critical to the ''Vision 21 Energy-Plex Fleet'' of modular, high-efficiency, low-emission power systems. Specifically, our NDE work has continued toward faster, higher sensitivity, volumetric… more

Modeling of Tritium Retention in TFTR

Description: The Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) tritium retention experience is reviewed and the data related to models of plasma surface interactions. Over 3.5 years of TFTR deuterium-tritium operations, approximately 51% of the tritium injected into TFTR was retained in the torus. Most of this was subsequently recovered by glow discharges and air ventilation. Co-deposition rates for representative conditions in tritium operation were modeled with the BBQ code. The calculations indicate that known eros… more

Recent progress in the development of a circular ion induction accelerator for space charge dominated beams at LLNL

Description: The Heavy Ion Fusion Group at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has for several years been developing the worlds first circular ion induction accelerator. This machine has recently been extended to 90 degrees, or 10 half-lattice periods (HLP) with full beam transport. In addition, induction cores have been installed on five of the HLPs, each with an independent arbitrary waveform pulser. An arbitrary waveform pulser for the bending electrostatic dipoles has also been enabled. Together, t… more
