The Federal Workforce: Additional Insights Could Enhance Agency Efforts Related to Hispanic Representation

Description: A letter report issued by the Government Accountability Office with an abstract that begins "Hispanic representation in the federal workforce has historically been lower than in the Civilian Labor Force (CLF). Understanding factors affecting representation is important to developing and maintaining a high-quality and inclusive workforce. In this report, GAO identifies and analyzes factors affecting Hispanic representation in the federal workforce, examines oversight roles of EEOC and OPM, and p… more

Potential COntrol Under Thin Aqueous Layers Using a Kelvin Probe

Description: Kelvin Probes can be modified to control as well as monitor potential. The design and operation of two different Kelvin Probe Potentiostats (KPPs) are described in this paper. One approach uses a permanent magnet and double coil to oscillate the needle at a fixed frequency, an AC backing potential, and software analysis and control schemes. This technique can also control the distance between the tip and sample, thereby tracking the topography of the sample. Both KPPs were used to make measurem… more

DEUTERIUM, TRITIUM, AND HELIUM DESORPTION FROM AGED TITANIUM TRITIDES. PART II.

Description: Six new samples of tritium-aged bulk titanium have been examined by thermal desorption and isotope exchange chemistry. The discovery of a lower temperature hydrogen desorption state in these materials, previously reported, has been confirmed in one of the new samples. The helium release of the samples shows the more severe effects obtained from longer aging periods, i.e. higher initial He/M ratios. Several of the more aged samples were spontaneously releasing helium. Part I discussed the new re… more

HIGH LEVEL WASTE (HLW) SLUDGE BATCH 4 (SB4): SELECTING GLASSES FOR A VARIABILITY STUDY

Description: A critical step in the Sludge Batch 4 (SB4) qualification process is to demonstrate the applicability of the durability models, which are used as part of the Defense Waste Processing Facility's (DWPF's) process control strategy, to the frit / SB4 glass system via a variability study. A variability study is an experimentally-driven assessment of the predictability and acceptability of the vitrified waste product quality that is anticipated from the processing of a sludge batch. The quality of th… more

Sliding Mode Pulsed Averaging IC Drivers for High Brightness Light Emitting Diodes

Description: This project developed new Light Emitting Diode (LED) driver ICs associated with specific (uniquely operated) switching power supplies that optimize performance for High Brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs). The drivers utilize a digital control core with a newly developed nonlinear, hysteretic/sliding mode controller with mixed-signal processing. The drivers are flexible enough to allow both traditional microprocessor interface as well as other options such as “on the fly” adjustment of color and brightn… more

Bambino: A Segmented Silicon Detector System for Tigress

Description: Bambino is a charge-particle detector system with sufficient energy and position resolutions for the differentiation between projectile-like and target-like particles and for the needed Doppler-shift corrections to the detected {gamma} rays in TIGRESS. It consists of two annular silicon detectors having an active inner diameter of 22 mm and outer diameter of 70 mm and a thickness about 150 {micro}m. They are placed 3.0 cm from the target and provide solid-angle coverage of 1.15{pi} sr. Each has… more

Computational Efforts in Support of Advanced Coal Research

Description: The focus in this project was to employ first principles computational methods to study the underlying molecular elementary processes that govern hydrogen diffusion through Pd membranes as well as the elementary processes that govern the CO- and S-poisoning of these membranes. Our computational methodology integrated a multiscale hierarchical modeling approach, wherein a molecular understanding of the interactions between various species is gained from ab-initio quantum chemical Density Functio… more

Modeling Gas-Phase Transport in Polymer-Electrolyte FuelCells

Description: In this transaction, the equations and methodology for modeling convection and ordinary, Knudsen, and pressure diffusion of gases in a fuel-cell gas-diffusion layer are described. Some results examining the magnitudes of the various terms are also made. This derivation results in a self-consistent description of the various transport mechanisms and is robust for numerical solutions, especially for conditions involving different flow regimes or where the regime is not known a priori.
