Performance Study of ScepterTM Metal Bond Diamond Grinding Wheel

Description: Advanced ceramics are attractive for many applications in the transportation, energy, military, and industrial markets because they possess properties of high-temperature durability, corrosion resistance, strength, hardness, stiffness, and wear resistance. Unfortunately, these same properties make advanced ceramics more difficult to machine than traditional materials. The reliability and manufacturing costs of advanced ceramic components are significant concerns that must be overcome. Neverthel… more

Atomic Resolution Microscopy of Semiconductor Defects and Interfaces

Description: The optical arrangement of the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) allows formation of incoherent images by use of a large annular detector. Here we show this capability in the imaging of defects in GaN and the interfacial region of an Au/GaAs ohmic contact. A resolution of around 0.15 nm is attained. Such Z-contrast images show strong atomic number contrast and allow the probe to be positioned accurately at the defect or interface for the purpose of performing high spatial resolut… more

The Effect of Near-Interface Network Strain on the Mobility of Protons in SiO{sub 2}

Description: Our data suggest a correlation between near-interface strain in SiO{sub 2} and the ratio of fixed vs. mobile positive charge generated at the interface during forming gas annealing. A model based on first-principles quantum mechanical calculations supports this correlation.

Effect of the beam-beam interactions on the dynamic aperture and amplitude growth in the LHC

Description: The dynamic aperture at collision energy is determined pri-marily by the nonlinear fields of the IR quadrupoles but is also influenced by the beam-beam interactions. We revisit the choice of the crossing angle that maximizes the dynamic aperture with an accurate modeling of the long-range inter-actions and use of the present values of the IR quadrupole field harmonics. A separate but related issue we address is the amplitude growth of particles in the beam halo due to the long-range interaction… more

Inductive Voltage Adder Driven X-Ray Sources for Hydrodynamic Radiography

Description: Inductive Voltage Adder (IVA) accelerators were developed to provide high-current (100s of kA) power pulses at high voltage (up to 20 MV) using robust modular components. This architecture simultaneously resolves problems found in conventional pulsed and linear induction accelerators. A variety of high-brightness pulsed x-ray radiographic sources are needed from sub-megavolt to 16-MeV endpoints with greater source brightness (dose/spot) than presently available. We are applying IVA systems to p… more
