China, Congress, and Sanctions - Findings of a Workshop-Seminar

Description: The People's Republic of China (PRC)'s provocative use of military force in the Taiwan Strait has appeared to subside, but not before convincing many in the Congress that the PRC regime continues to flout international norms sensitive to the United States. In addition to challenging stability in the Taiwan Strait, the PRC is seen recently to undermine important U.S. interests regarding nuclear proliferation, intellectual property rights, and missile proliferation. As a result, many in the Congr… more

A low power, tight seal, polyimide electrostatic microvalve

Description: An electrostatically-actuated polyimide microvalve is developed with sub-micron gaps between the electrodes to provide high force with low power consumption (< 1 mW). Built-in residual stress results in a curled bimorph cantilever which allows for a n-Licroactuator with large displacement. This microactuator is used to open and close a fluid path hole etched in silicon for a microvalve. The microactuator can be actuated with 25V for a displacement of 200 {mu}m. The cantilever actuator is mainly… more

Compact IR laser for calibration of space based sensors

Description: An Er:YAG laser, operating at 2.94 microns, has been developed for in-theater calibration of space based infrared sensors. The laser is used to illuminate a spaceborne sensor focal plane from a surveyed ground reference point. The known reference point is compared to the laser position reported by the sensor, and boresight corrections are made. The Er:YAG laser is side pumped by a InGaAs diode array and is tuned to an atmospheric microwindow with and intracavity etalon. This technology is being… more

Development of a Monolithic, Multi-MEMS Microsystem on a Chip Demonstrating iMEMs VLSI Technology. R and D Status Report Number 10, January 1--March 31, 1996

Description: This quarter saw the first silicon from the iMEMS{reg_sign} test chip, with complete circuits and beam structures. The wafers looked fine cosmetically and the circuits functioned as designed, but the beams suffered an anomaly that the authors have never seen before. Diagnostic work is under way to sort out the root cause, and other wafers are coming out this quarter to see if it was a one-time anomaly. Work on the process-development front has slowed because of the construction of a dedicated f… more

Nonradioactive Air Emissions Notice of Construction use on a portable exhauster on 241-A-101 tank during salt well pumping

Description: The 241-A-101 tank, a 22.9 meter 3,785,400 liter capacity SST, was constructed from the fourth generation of tank designs, which were capable of holding boiling or self-concentrating waste. Construction features a reinforced concrete shell, dome, and base with a mild steel liner covering the bottom and sidewalls. The tank has a flat bottom with a usable waste depth of approximately 9.4 meters. The tank was put into service in 1956 to store plutonium-uranium extraction (PUREX) high-level waste a… more

Radioactive air emissions notice of construction: Use of a portable exhauster on 241-A-101 tank during salt well pumping

Description: This document serves as a notice of construction (NOC) for the use of a portable exhauster on 241-A-101 single-shell tank (SST) during salt well pumping and other routine activities at the tank. Approval for salt well pumping is not being requested as this is a routine activity performed to manage the waste within the SST Tank System. The primary objective of providing active ventilation to the 241-A-101 tank is to satisfy the requirements of a Los Alamos National Laboratories (LANL) Safety Ana… more

Full Body Powder Antichip. Final Report

Description: Chipping is the major paint defect listed for automobile customer dissatisfaction. The improved chip resistance and smoother paint surfaces produced by full body powder antichip will result in greater customer satisfaction and greater demand for US-produced automobiles. Powder antichip contains virtually no solvent, thereby reducing the potential VOC emissions from Newark Assembly by more than 90 tons per year as compared to the solvent-borne material presently applied in most full body applica… more
