Simulation of Grain Growth in a Near-Eutectic Solder Alloy

Description: Microstructural evolution due to aging of solder alloys determines their long-term reliability as electrical, mechanical and thermal interconnects in electronics packages. The ability to accurately determine the reliability of existing electronic components as well as to predict the performance of proposed designs depends upon the development of reliable material models. A kinetic Monte Carlo simulation was used to simulate microstructural evolution in solder-class materials. The grain growth m… more

Effects of Barometric Fluctuations on Well Water-Level Measurements and Aquifer Test Data

Description: The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, as part of the Hanford Groundwater Monitoring Project, examines the potential for offsite migration of contamination within underlying aquifer systems. Well water-level elevation measurements from selected wells within these aquifer systems commonly form the basis for delineating groundwater-flow patterns (i.e., flow direction and hydraulic gradient). In addition, the analysis of water-level responses obtained in wells during hydrologic tests provides … more

NSTX Electrical Power Systems

Description: The National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) has been designed and installed in the existing facilities at Princeton Plasma Physic Laboratory (PPPL). Most of the hardware, plant facilities, auxiliary sub-systems, and power systems originally used for the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) have been used with suitable modifications to reflect NSTX needs. The design of the NSTX electrical power system was tailored to suit the available infrastructure and electrical equipment on site. Components… more

Microwave Imaging Reflectometry for the Visualization of Turbulence in Tokamaks

Description: Understanding the mechanism of anomalous transport in magnetically confined plasmas requires the use of sophisticated diagnostic tools for the measurement of short-scale turbulent fluctuations. This paper describes the conceptual design of an experimental technique for the global visualization of density fluctuations in tokamaks. The proposed method is based on microwave reflectometry and consists in using a large diameter probing beam, collecting the reflected waves with a large aperture anten… more

Surface topographic analyses of two-year coupons of alloy 22 from long-term corrosion testing

Description: We have applied atomic force microscopy (AFM) to analyze the surface topographies associated with representatives of each of the classes of aqueous-baths from which coupons of Alloy 22 were exposed for two years in Long-Term Corrosion Testing. The data support the conclusion that the AFM offers little, if any qualitative information on the corrosion of coupons which are currently undergoing Long-Term Testing.

Effects of Barometric Fluctuations on Well Water-Level Measurements and Aquifer Test Data

Description: This report examines the effects of barometric fluctuations on well water-level measurements and evaluates adjustment and removal methods for determining areal aquifer head conditions and aquifer test analysis. Two examples of Hanford Site unconfined aquifer tests are examined that demonstrate baro-metric response analysis and illustrate the predictive/removal capabilities of various methods for well water-level and aquifer total head values. Good predictive/removal characteristics were demonst… more

Photodissociation spectroscopy and dynamics of free radicals, clusters, and ions

Description: The photodissociation spectroscopy and dynamics of free radicals and ions is studied to characterize the dissociative electronic states in these species. To accomplish this, a special method of radical production, based on the photodetachment of the corresponding negative ion, has been combined with the technique of fast beam photofragment translational spectroscopy. The photofragment yield as a function of photon energy is obtained, mapping out the dissociative and predissociative electronic s… more

Growth of a Au-Ni-Sn intermetallic compound on the solder-substrate interface after aging

Description: Au/Ni metallization has become increasingly common in microelectronic packaging when Cu pads are joined with Pb-Sn solder. The outermost Au layer serves to protect the pad from corrosion and oxidation and the Ni layer provides a diffusion barrier to inhibit detrimental growth of Cu-Sn intermetallics. As a result of reflowing eutectic Pb-Sn on top of Au/Ni metallization, the as-solidified joints have AuSn{sub 4} precipitates distributed throughout the bulk of the solder joint, and Ni{sub 3}Sn{su… more

Stable isotopic investigations of in-situ bioremediation of chlorinated organic solvents

Description: The purpose of this project was to investigate the potential applications of stable isotope ratio measurements in characterization of the source terms, the transport, and the fate of chlorinated solvents in groundwater aquifers. The approach to this research was threefold: to develop methods for the sampling and isotopic analysis of chlorinated solvents in groundwaters; to perform laboratory experiments to measure equilibrium and kinetic isotope effects associated with biological and physical t… more

Modeling KDP Bulk Damage Curves for Prediction of Large-Area Damage Performance

Description: Over the past two years extensive experimentation has been carded out to determine the nature of bulk damage in KDP. Automated damage testing with small beams has made it possible to rapidly investigate damage statistics and its connection to growth parameter Variation. Over this time we have built up an encyclopedia of many damage curves but only relatively few samples have been tested with large beams. The scarcity of data makes it difficult to estimate how future crystals will perform on the… more

X-ray absorption spectroscopy on the calcium cofactor to the manganese cluster in photosynthetic oxygen evolution

Description: Along with Mn, calcium and chloride ions are necessary cofactors for oxygen evolution in Photosystem II (PS II). To further test and verify whether Ca is close to the Mn cluster, the authors substituted strontium for Ca and probed from the Sr point of view for any nearby Mn. The extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of Sr-reactivated PS II indicates major differences between the intact and NH{sub 2}OH-treated samples. In intact samples, the Fourier transform of the Sr EXAFS shows a F… more
