Enhancement of Equilibrium Shift in Dehydrogenation Reactions Using a Novel Membrane Reactor Semi-Annual Report: March-September 1998

Description: Electroless deposition of palladium thin-films on a surface of microporous ceramic substrate has been used to develop a new class of perm-selective inorganic membrane. In the last report, we presented a numerical method to analyze the stability in single-stage gas permeation. In this reporting period, we present our modeling work on dehydrogenation of cyclohexane in Pd-Ceramic membrane reactor. A model for studying dehydrogenation of cyclohexane in a membrane reactor is developed. Radial diffus… more

Structural analysis of a completely amorphous {sup 238}Pu-doped zircon by neutron diffraction.

Description: The structure of a completely amorphous zircon was determined by time-of-flight neutron diffraction at Argonne's Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS). The sample of metamict zircon (ZrSiO{sub 4}),initially doped to 8.85 weight percent {sup 238}Pi, had been completely amorphized by alpha-recoil damage since its synthesis in 1981 at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). The measured diffraction structure factor, S(Q), indicated a completely amorphous sample, with no signs of residual … more

Fuel-cycle greenhouse gas emissions impacts of alternative transportation fuels and advanced vehicle technologies.

Description: At an international conference on global warming, held in Kyoto, Japan, in December 1997, the United States committed to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 7% over its 1990 level by the year 2012. To help achieve that goal, transportation GHG emissions need to be reduced. Using Argonne's fuel-cycle model, I estimated GHG emissions reduction potentials of various near- and long-term transportation technologies. The estimated per-mile GHG emissions results show that alternative transpor… more

A universal postprocessing toolkit for accelerator simulation and data analysis.

Description: The Self-Describing Data Sets (SDDS) toolkit comprises about 70 generally-applicable programs sharing a common data protocol. At the Advanced Photon Source (APS), SDDS performs the vast majority of operational data collection and processing, most data display functions, and many control functions. In addition, a number of accelerator simulation codes use SDDS for all post-processing and data display. This has three principle advantages: first, simulation codes need not provide customized post-p… more

Microstructure and leaching characteristics of a technetium containing metal waste form.

Description: Argonne National Laboratory is developing an electrometallurgical treatment for spent fuel from the experimental breeder reactor II. A product of this treatment process is a metal waste form that incorporates the stainless steel cladding hulls, zirconium from the fuel and the fission products that are noble to the process, i.e., Tc, Ru, Pd, Rh, Ag. The nominal composition of this waste form is stainless steel/15 wt% zirconium 1-4 wt% noble metal fission products. The behavior of technetium is o… more

A multigrid strategy for accelerating steady-state computations of waves propagating with curvature dependent speeds

Description: A multigrid strategy is developed for accelerating the steady state computations of waves propagating with curvature dependent speeds. This will allow the rapid computation of a burn table. In a high explosive material, the creation of a burn table will allow the elimination of solving chemical reaction ODEs and feed in source terms to the reactive flow equations for solution of the system of ignition of the high explosive material. Standard iterative methods show a quick reduction of the resid… more

Linking ab initio energetics to experiment: kinetic Monte Carlo simulation of transient enhanced diffusion of B in Si

Description: We have developed a kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulator that links atomic migration and binding energies determined primarily from first principles calculations to macroscopic phenomena and laboratory time scales. Input for the kMC simulation is obtained from a combination of ab initio planewave pseudopotential calculations, molecular dynamics simulations, and experimental data. The simulator is validated against an extensive series of experimental studies of the diffusion of B spikes in self-i… more

Zinc Bromide Combustion: Implications for the Consolidated Incinerator Facility

Description: In the nuclear industry, zinc bromide (ZnBr2) is used for radiation shielding. At Savannah River Site (SRS) zinc bromide solution, in appropriate configurations and housings, was used mainly for shielding in viewing windows in nuclear reactor and separation areas. Waste stream feeds that will be incinerated at the CIF will occasionally include zinc bromide solution/gel matrices. The CIF air pollution systems control uses a water-quench and steam atomizer scrubber that collects salts, ash and tra… more

Ozone risk assessment utilities (ORAMUS) user's manual and tutorial : Volume 2, Chronic health endpoints.

Description: The primary purpose of this manual is to provide instructions on how to install and use the ORAMUS (Ozone Risk AssessMent UtilitieS) software. ORAMUS is a DOS-based software system that allows you to calculate and view risk estimates for health effects attributable to short- and long-term exposure to tropospheric ozone. The system combines exposure estimates with exposure-response relationships and then calculates and displays estimates of the overall risk in the form of probability distributio… more

Atmospheric chemistry effects of the 1998 Mexican/Central American fires measured in central New Mexico USA.

Description: Atmospheric effects from large fires have received a great deal of interest recently, especially when the fires have the potential to effect human health when the plumes are transported long distances over areas of high population density. Examples are the recent large fires in Southeast Asia in 1997 (1) and the wildfires occurring in southern Mexico and Central America that were manifested in decreased visibility and high aerosol concentrations in the United States at distances of 2500-4000 km… more

First-principles study of {pi}-bonded (100) planar defects in diamond.

Description: A periodic density functional study of the high-energy {pi}-bonded (100) stacking fault in diamond that can serve as a prototype of a twist grain boundary has been carried out. Information on formation energies, geometries and the electronic structure has been obtained. A single point electronic structure calculation of a {Sigma}5 twist grain boundary based on the geometry taken from a molecular dynamics simulation has also been performed.

Effects of alpha decay damage on the structure and leaching rates of a glass-bonded ceramic high level waste form.

Description: Argonne National Laboratory has developed a glass-bonded sodalite ceramic waste form to immobilize fission products and plutonium that accumulate during the electrometallurgical conditioning of spent nuclear fuel. To investigate the effects of alpha decay damage on the structure and leaching characteristics of the ceramic material, {sup 238}Pu has been incorporated into the ceramic waste form. The {sup 238}Pu,with its higher specific activity, significantly increases the rate of alpha damage to… more

Extending dry storage of spent LWR fuel for 100 years.

Description: Because of delays in closing the back end of the fuel cycle in the U.S., there is a need to extend dry inert storage of spent fuel beyond its originally anticipated 20-year duration. Many of the methodologies developed to support initial licensing for 20-year storage should be able to support the longer storage periods envisioned. This paper evaluates the applicability of existing information and methodologies to support dry storage up to 100 years. The thrust of the analysis is the potential b… more
