A {radical}S = 1 TeV ep collider at Fermilab.

Description: One of the major projects being considered for future construction at Fermilab is a Very Large Hadron Collider (VLHC). This project will require a new High Energy Booster ring, 33 km in circumference, to provide 3 TeV proton beams for injection into the VLHC. Here we discuss the possibility to build an ep collider in the VLHC Booster tunnel. A LEP-like e{sup {+-}} beam (83 GeV) would collide with one of the proton beams (3 TeV) to create a {radical}s {approx} 1 TeV ep collider. Design groups at… more

Enzyme catalysts for a biotechnology-based chemical industry. Final report, September 29, 1993--September 28, 1998

Description: Enzymes have enormous potential for reducing energy requirements and environmental problems in the chemicals and pharmaceutical industries. The explosion of tools that has come out of molecular biology during the last 20 years has made it possible to evolve enzymes for features never required in nature. Scientists can speed up the rate and channel the direction of evolution by controlling mutagenesis and the accompanying selection pressures. Darwinian evolution carried out in the test tube offe… more

Task 6.3/6.7.4 - Engineering Performance of Advanced Structural Materials

Description: Future energy systems will be required to fire low-grade fuels and meet higher energy conversion efficiencies than today's systems. The steam cycle used at present is-limited to a maximum temperature of 550C, because above that the stainless steel tubes deform and corrode excessively. However, to boost efficiency significantly, much higher working fluid temperatures are required. Although high-temperature alloys will suffice for the construction of these components in the near term, the greates… more

A Novel Method for the Determination of Gross Transuranic Activity in Uranium Compounds

Description: A Method is described to determine gross transuranic activity present in Uranium compounds and HP smears. From one count and one spectrum, three or more isotopes can be quantified. The method involves a simple digestion prep, sample extraction and precipitation. Results are obtained quickly with a very small expenditure on the part of the analytical lab.

Identifying Electronic Properties Relevant to Improving Stability in a-Si:H-Based Cells and Overall Performance in a-Si,Ge:H-Based Cells; final Subcontract Report, 18 April 1994-15 January 1998

Description: The work carried out by the University of Oregon Under this subcontract focused on the characterization and evaluation of low-gap (a-Si,Ge:H) alloy materials and on issues related to overall stability in the mid-gap (a-SiH) materials. First, researchers characterized an extensive series of Uni-Solar a-Si,Ge:H samples using drive-level capacitance profiling and the analysis of sub-band-gap photocapacitance and photocurrent spectra. Thus, several bands of deep defect transitions were identified. … more

Neural Network Modeling of Weld Pool Shape in Pulsed-Laser Aluminum Welds

Description: A neural network model was developed to predict the weld pool shape for pulsed-laser aluminum welds. Several different network architectures were examined and the optimum architecture was identified. The neural network was then trained and, in spite of the small size of the training data set, the network accurately predicted the weld pool shape profiles. The neural network output was in the form of four weld pool shape parameters (depth, width, half-width, and area) and these were converted int… more

U.S. second line of defense: preventing nuclear smuggling across Russia's borders

Description: Preventing the theft of weapons-usable highly enriched uranium and plutonium in Russia is one of the central security concerns facing the US today. The dissolution of the highly centralized USSR and the resulting societal crisis has endangered Russia's ability to protect its more than 200 metric tons of plutonium and 1000 tons of highly enriched uranium (roughly 8 kg Pu or 25 kg HEU is sufficient to make a bomb). Producing this fissile material is the most difficult and expensive part of nuclea… more

Status and update of the National Ignition Facility radiation effects testing program

Description: We are progressing in our efforts to make the National Ignition Facility (NIF) available to the nation as a radiation effects simulator to support the Services needs for nuclear hardness and survivability testing and validation. Details of our program were summarized in a paper presented at the 1998 HEART Conference [1]. This paper describes recent activities and updates plans for NIF radiation effects testing. research. Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF): Principles, Status, and International Collaboration

Description: Magnetized target fusion (MTF) is an approach to thermonuclear fusion that is intermediate between the two extremes of inertial and magnetic confinement. Target plasma preparation is followed by compression to fusion conditions. The use of a magnetic field to reduce electron thermal conduction and potentially enhance DT alpha energy deposition allows the compression rate to be drastically reduced relative to that for inertial confinement fusion. This leads to compact systems with target driver … more
