Systems study of fuels from grains and grasses. Quarterly progress report, July--October 1976

Description: The specific objectives of the project are to determine on a geographic basis the current and potential USA production capability for grain and grass crops, to perform a preliminary screening of conversion processes, and to perform preliminary technical and economic feasibility analyses. The results obtained to date on biomass production, conversion processes, and data management are reported. (JSR)

Calculation of emission from hydrogenic ions in super liquid density plasmas

Description: Previous calculations of line emission were extended to higher density, lower temperature plasmas, typical of those expected in early ablative compression experiments. Emission from Ne-seeded fuel was analyzed in order to diagnose the density and temperature of the compressed core. The Stark/Doppler broadened emission profile is calculated for the H-like Ne resonance line. The observable lineshape is then obtained by time-averaging over expected density and temperature profiles and by including… more

Investigations in silicate glasses. I. Radiation damage. II. Optical nonlinearity. [Gamma rays and electrons]

Description: The investigation of two poorly understood but technologically important physical properties of silicate glasses and related materials is described. The use of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance to investigate the nature of radiation-induced damage in glasses exposed to a variety of high-energy radiation sources is discussed first. Second, the measurement of the nonlinear index of refraction coefficient in a variety of optical materials related to the design of high-power laser systems is describe… more

Literature review of EMP effects on apertures

Description: A review of the literature on the electromagnetics coupling through apertures is presented. The particular problem of interest is the various methods used to find the effect of EMP coupling through apertures. Also, the areas needed for future studies are outlined. 35 references. (WHK)

Monitor of distributed data systems (MODDS). Part 1. Digest of functional specifications

Description: Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLL) investigated a new approach for improving the use of geographically distributed computer services used by the U. S. Department of Transportation/Transportation Systems Center (DOT/TSC). The interactive use of these distributed services (a major portion of which are data bases) consumes increasing amounts of the DOT user-analyst's time. The new approach increases accountability, selection capability, usability, and control of distributed services usage. L… more

Annual technical progress report inducer pump program government fiscal year 1976 and 1976T. [LMFBR]

Description: The Inducer Pump Program was initiated to demonstrate the applicability and advantages of an inducer pump to the LMFBR. The inducer is a pump blading which is specifically tailored to provide excellent suction performance. Operating suction specific speeds two to three times those for the inlet of a centrifugal impeller can be achieved with a properly and conservatively designed inducer. When coupled to a centrifugal impeller, the inducer offers excellent suction performance which can be effect… more

Conceptual design of the blanket and power conversion system for a mirror hybrid fusion-fission reactor. Addendum 1. Alternate concepts. 12-month progress report addendum, July 1, 1975--June 30, 1976

Description: During the course of the Mirror Hybrid Fusion-Fission Reactor study several alternate concepts were considered for various reactor components. Several of the alternate concepts do appear to exhibit features with potential advantage for use in the mirror hybrid reactor. These are described and should possibly be investigated further in the future.

Experimental program in medium energy physics. Progress report, February 16, 1976--November 15, 1976. [Summaries of research activities at Northwestern University, experimental preparation]

Description: This report covers the nine-month period, February 15 to November 15, 1976. During this period, in the main part, continued activities towards the completion of the EPICS and HRS spectrometers at LAMPF were continued. The entire HRS facility was successfully completed and test-data are now being taken. The EPICS channel was completed, and the tune-up of the channel successfully done. The EPICS spectrometer assembly is still continuing. Data taking on one experiment in collaboration with CEN de … more
