An "Exact" Analysis of a Cylindrical Plasma in a Magnetic Field

Description: Abstract: "The analysis of an immobilized plasma is here extended to the case where the geometry is cylindrical rather than Cartesian. (This report, UCRL-4439 (Rev, 4 constitutes Part II of the report series (UCRL-4466, Parts I, III, and IV) dealing with this general problem.)"

Measurements of an Iron and Borated Water Shield in the Lid Tank : Experiment 10

Description: The following report measures a shield mockup in three regions: the first made almost entire of iron; the second, transition, region is made of various thicknesses of B4C; and the third region was borated water. The iron samples used in the experiments were made in the form of rectangular plates and place in the lid tank; however, the plates were not completely flat and created a water gap that was measured in this report.

Note of the Function of the Aquadag in the Stellarator

Description: The following report introduces the aquadag, a part of the stellarator with the purposes to prevent the non-uniform accumulation of electrostatic charges on the walls of the stellerator and to free the electrons of the stellerator and provide accelerations, achieving a uniform field distribution.

Corrosion of Aluminum and Beryllium by MTR Canal Water

Description: Introduction: "In the early operation of the WTR severe canal corrosion of dummy fuel assemblies and a beryllium A-piece caused a great deal of concern as to the possible effects of long-time canal storage on such elements. A short-term experimental program was started to determine the causes of this corrosion and to correct them before any irradiated fuel elements had to be stored in the canal. The results of this program are presented here."

Dynamic Corrosion and Mass Transfer of Chrome Steel by Bismuth

Description: From introduction: "This report summarizes the experimental data obtained at the San Pablo Laboratory on the corrosion of 5% Cr - 0.5% Mo steel by bismuth under conditions that allow mass transfer to occur. The bismuth is circulated through a temperature gradient by means of a thermosiphon loop."

Lung Hazards From Inhaled Radioactive Particulate Matter

Description: Conclusions from the study: "Radioactive dusts are carcinogenic, and can cause cancer of the lung. complete dose response curves have not yet been determined. All the parameters that render this demonstrably toxic material (radioactive dust) have not yet been evaluated. It is strongly suggested by the experimental data that duration of radiological insult to the lung is an important factor in eliciting lung cancer. The atmospheric tolerance concentrations now in use seem to afford little marg… more

On the Generalized Overrelaxation Method for Operator Equations

Description: "In Householder, using Weissinger's identity , obtained the necessary and sufficient conditions for the c onvergence of the Seidel method for the solution of finite matrix equations of the form (D-S-S*-F)u = f. The same coniditions were also obtained by Krein and Prozorovakaya for an analog of the Seidel method for the operator equations of the form (D+S+S*)u = f in a Hilbert space. The purpose of this article is to extend the result of the above authors to the generalized overrelaxation iter… more

Detection of Airborne Beryllium Dust : Monthly Report Covering the Period from May1 to June 1, 1955

Description: During this period a prototype gamma ray detection system was assembled and data was obtained on samples of beryllium salts on filter paper under a variety of conditions. Ordinarily either a scaler-register combination or the CRM-recorder combination would be sufficient for obtaining data. Both units have been used here in order to utilize the particular advantages of each system. The scaler-register unit was employed for obtaining precise data over short intervals while the CRM-recorder was us… more

Survey of the Present Status of Isotope Separation Methods

Description: The problem of the separation or enrichment of isotopes is as old as the knowledge of the existence of isotopes of stable elements. The article focuses on the mass-dependent property of atoms continuing to be investigated in laboratories to test its usefulness for new solutions to this problem.

Low Speed Wind Tunnel Tests of Several Airfoil Sections Through 360 ° Angle of Attack

Description: A series of two-dimensional airfoils were run through a complete 360 ° angle of attack range to determine their low-speed force characteristics. The airfoils were chosen in an attempt to vary as many parameters (such as thickness, camber, thickness distribution, etc.) as possible with the limited number of shapes that time permitted. All airfoils tested had lift curves with two distinct stalls and quite similar drag curves between 0 ° and 90 ° angle of attack. The highly cambered sections devel… more
