Study of the health effects of bicycling in an urban atmosphere. Final report

Description: This report analyzes data on the health effects of bicycling in an urban environment through intensive study of ten healthy male subjects bicycling or driving in systematically varied conditions in the streets of Washington, D.C. Evaluation criteria for available technology and instrumentation are included and a methodology is developed for route selection. Specific air pollutants (carbon monoxide, ozone, sulfates, nitrates, and particulates) are measured concurrently with exposure and subseque… more

New approach to regression in certain time/space series problems. Technical report No. 11. [Dose-response relationships for air pollution]

Description: This paper introduces a new method for estimating a dose-response relationship from spatially averaged time series of air pollution and health data. Because time is perceived as a nuisance parameter to be eliminated, least-squares regression and traditional time series methodology (e.g., spectral analysis, Box-Jenkins methods) are rejected in favor of a nonparametric estimation procedure based on observing health effects in times of nearly equal pollution. The method requires estimating the rat… more

Screw calciner mechanical direct denitration process for plutonium nitrate to oxide conversion

Description: This report describes a screw calciner direct-denitration process for converting plutonium nitrate to plutonium oxide. The information should be used when making comparisons of alternative plutonium nitrate-to-oxide conversion processes or as a basis for further detailed studies. The report contains process flow sheets with a material balance; a process description; and a discussion of the process including history, advantages and disadvantages, and additional research required.

Results from the 1/5-scale Mark I BWR pressure suppression experiment

Description: A series of consistent, versatile, and accurate air-water tests simulating LOCA conditions has been completed on the /sup 1///sub 5/-scale Mark I BWR Pressure Suppression Experimental Facility. Detailed histories of vertical loads on the wetwell are obtained in a carefully scaled three-dimensional system. In particular, variation of hydrodynamic-generated vertical loads with changes in drywell pressurization rate, downcomer submergence, and the vent-line loss coefficient were established. An in… more

Volume reduction of tritiated liquid wastes with super slurper

Description: A method of packaging low-specific-activity tritiated waste water was developed which could reduce the volume of this kind of waste shipped from Mound Laboratory by 20 percent. This was accomplished by reducing the amounts of cement and attapulgite which are currently added to the waste water for immobilization and adding a highly adsorbent polymer called super slurper.

Acetic acid production from marine algae. Progress report No. 1, July 1--September 30, 1977

Description: Progress is reported in research designed to develop an economically competitive process for producing acetic acid from biomass for the purpose of sparing petroleum for other uses, to evaluate marine algae as a potential source of biomass, and to document the feasibility of running fermentations in fixed packed bed fermenters. It was demonstrated that marine algae can be fermented to acetic acid. Initial rates of up to 168 meq/1 day were observed. These rates are substantially in excess of the … more
