Transport theory in the collisionless limit

Description: Traditional transport theory provides a closure of fluid equations that is valid in the collisional, short mean-free-path limit. The possibility of extending an analogous closure to long mean-free path is examined here. An appropriate kinetic equation, using a model collision operator, is solved rigorously for arbitrary collisionality but weak, Maxwellian source terms. The corresponding particle and heat flows are then expressed in terms of the density and temperature profiles. The transport ma… more

Alternative repository criticality-control strategies for fissile uranium wastes

Description: Methods to prevent long term, disposal site nuclear criticality from fissile uranium isotopes in wastes were investigated. Long term refers to the time period after waste package (WP) failure and the subsequent loss of geometry and chemistry control within the WP. The preferred method of control was found to be the addition of sufficient depleted uranium to each WP so that the uranium enrichment is reduced to < 1 wt % {sup 235}U and < 0.66 wt % {sup 233}U in {sup 238}U.

Phase 3 Final Topical Report for the Remote Operated Vehicle with C02 Blasting (ROVCO2)

Description: This report documents the third and final phase of the Remote Operated Vehicle with CO2 Blasting (ROVCO2) Program. The Program=s goal is to develop and demonstrate a tool to improve the productivity of concrete floor decontamination. In Phase 3 of the ROVCO2 program, the workhead and the COYOTEE end-effector were redesigned, and effectiveness and productivity tests were performed. This report documents the development activities. The results show that the ROVCO2 system is an efficient decontami… more

SPC techniques for the M-48 Coordinate Measurement Machine applied to uncertainty analysis and monitoring

Description: The Moore M-48 Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) is used to calibrate step gages, ball bars and hole plates. The expanded uncertainty (2 sigma) of the M-48 CMM was determined to be {+-}0.3 + 0.4 L microns (L is length in meters), using the decomposition method. The problem statement becomes, how does one monitor and control the calibration process to ensure that one maintains this level of reliability? Traditional methods of statistical process control, such as X-bar and R charts assume large … more

V-Chip and TV Ratings: Helping Parents Supervise Their Children's Television Viewing

Description: To assist parents in supervising the television viewing habits of their children, Congress included a provision in the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (P.L. 104-104) that television sets with screens 13 inches or larger sold in the United States be equipped with a "V-chip" to screen out objectionable programming. A V-chip is a computer chip that can detect program rating information that is transmitted with the television signal (broadcast or cable) and block the display of programs designated a… more
