Calorimeter Process Variable Archiving

Description: These steps were taken to maintain weekly archives: (1) Friday morning you stop the archiver and wait for it to finish writing data (the lock file will be removed from the directory); (2) move the current archive information to a PC via FTP; (3) remove all previous archive information in the previous directory; (4) move the current archive into the previous directory; (5) start a new archive; (6) burn a CDROM of the archive; and (7) copy the current archive to a specific directory. There are 2 … more

Safety Basis Report

Description: As part of the internal Integrated Safety Management Assessment verification process, it was determined that there was a lack of documentation that summarizes the safety basis of the current Yucca Mountain Project (YMP) site characterization activities. It was noted that a safety basis would make it possible to establish a technically justifiable graded approach to the implementation of the requirements identified in the Standards/Requirements Identification Document. The Standards/Requirements… more

DENSE MEDIA CYCLONE OPTIMIZATION

Description: All work associated with Task 1 (Baseline Assessment) was successfully completed and preliminary corrections/recommendations were provided back to the management at each test site. Detailed float-sink tests were completed for Site No.1 and are currently underway for Sites No.2-No. 4. Unfortunately, the work associated with sample analyses (Task 4--Sample Analysis) has been delayed because of a backlog of coal samples at the commercial laboratory participating in this project. As a result, a no-… more

Large experiment data analysis collaboration. Final annual progress report for period November 15, 2000 - April 30, 2002

Description: Because of the good agreement between theory and experiment (on a number of tokamak experiments) on the nonlinear development, saturation of neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs), the study of NTMs is becoming a mature subject. Thus, our contributions to studies of neoclassical (and regular classical) tearing modes over the past year have focused on a number of particular, more detailed issues: flow shear effects on linear tearing modes, exploring the possibility of NTMs in spherical tokamaks such … more

Evaluation of Negative-Ion-Beam Driver Concepts for Heavy Ion Fusion

Description: We evaluate the feasibility of producing and using atomically neutral heavy ion beams produced from negative ions as drivers for an inertial confinement fusion reactor. Bromine and iodine appear to be the most attractive elements for the driver beams. Fluorine and chlorine appear to be the most appropriate feedstocks for initial tests of extractable negative ion current densities. With regards to ion sources, photodetachment neutralizers, and vacuum requirements for accelerators and beam transp… more

Chimeric Proteins to Detect DNA Damage and Mismatches

Description: The goal of this project was to develop chimeric proteins composed of a DNA mismatch or damage binding protein and a nuclease, as well as methods to detect DNA mismatches and damage. We accomplished this through protein engineering based on using polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) to create chimeras with novel functions for damage and mismatch detection. This project addressed fundamental questions relating to disease susceptibility and radiation-induced damage in cells. It also supported and en… more

Multiresolution Distance Volumes for Progressive Surface Compression

Description: Surfaces generated by scientific simulation and range scanning can reach into the billions of polygons. Such surfaces must be aggressively compressed, but at the same time should provide for level of detail queries. Progressive compression techniques based on subdivision surfaces produce impressive results on range scanned models. However, these methods require the construction of a base mesh which parameterizes the surface to be compressed and encodes the topology of the surface. For complex s… more

Development and test of single-bore CosJ Nb{sub 3}Sn dipole models with cold iron yoke

Description: Two short Nb{sub 3}Sn dipole models based on a single-bore cos-theta coil with a cold iron yoke were fabricated and tested at Fermilab. This paper summarizes the details of magnet design and fabrication procedure, and reports the test results including quench performance and quench heater studies, and the magnetic measurements.

R and D for a single-layer Nb{sub 3}Sn common coil dipole using the react-and-wind fabrication technique

Description: A dipole magnet based on the common coil design, using prereacted Nb{sub 3}Sn superconductor, is under development at Fermilab, for a future Very Large Hadron Collider. This magnet has some innovative design and technological features such as single layer coils, a 22 mm wide 60-strand Rutherford type cable and stainless steel collars reinforced by horizontal bridges inserted between coil blocks. Both left and right coils are wound simultaneously into the collar structure and then impregnated wi… more

The Next Linear Collider: NLC2001

Description: Recent studies in elementary particle physics have made the need for an e{sup +}e{sup -} linear collider able to reach energies of 500 GeV and above with high luminosity more compelling than ever [1]. Observations and measurements completed in the last five years at the SLC (SLAC), LEP (CERN), and the Tevatron (FNAL) can be explained only by the existence of at least one particle or interaction that has not yet been directly observed in experiment. The Higgs boson of the Standard Model could be… more

Magnetic designs and field quality of Nb{sub 3}Sn accelerator magnets

Description: This paper presents a new approach to accelerator magnet design, based on simple and robust single-layer coils with minimum number of turns arranged horizontally or vertically in a common iron yoke. Cos-theta and block type coil geometries as well as cold and warm iron yoke designs were studied. Coils and yokes were optimized for the maximum field, minimum field harmonics, and minimum sizes.

Site Characterization Work Plan for the Gnome-Coach Site, New Mexico (Rev. 1, January 2002)

Description: Project Gnome was the first nuclear experiment conducted under the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), predecessor to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Plowshare Program. The Plowshare Program focused on developing nuclear devices exclusively for peaceful purposes. The intent of the Gnome experiment was to evaluate the effects of a nuclear detonation in a salt medium. Historically, Project Gnome consisted of a single detonation of a nuclear device on December 10, 1961 with the Salado Format… more

DENSE MEDIA CYCLONE OPTIMIZATION

Description: During the past quarter, float-sink analyses were completed for four of seven circuits evaluated in this project. According to the commercial laboratory, the analyses for the remaining three sites will be finished by mid February 2002. In addition, it was necessary to repeat several of the float-sink tests to resolve problems identified during the analysis of the experimental data. In terms of accomplishments, a website is being prepared to distribute project findings and software to the public… more

Disadvantaged Businesses: A Review of Federal Assistance

Description: It is the policy of the federal government to encourage the development of small disadvantaged businesses (SDBs) owned by minorities and women. SDBs are statutorily defined as small businesses that are owned and controlled by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals who have been subjected to racial or ethnic prejudice or cultural bias and who have limited capital and credit opportunities. This report presents an overview of the major federal programs now in existence and indicates w… more
