Ion Optics of RHIC EBIS

Description: RHIC EBIS has been commissioned to operate as a versatile ion source on RHIC injection facility supplying ion species from He to Au for Booster. Except for light gaseous elements RHIC EBIS employs ion injection from several external primary ion sources. With electrostatic optics fast switching from one ion species to another can be done on a pulse to pulse mode. The design of an ion optical structure and the results of simulations for different ion species are presented. In the choice of optica… more

Muon Collider Progress: Accelerators

Description: A muon collider would be a powerful tool for exploring the energy-frontier with leptons, and would complement the studies now under way at the LHC. Such a device would offer several important benefits. Muons, like electrons, are point particles so the full center-of-mass energy is available for particle production. Moreover, on account of their higher mass, muons give rise to very little synchrotron radiation and produce very little beamstrahlung. The first feature permits the use of a circular… more

Mass Market Demand Response and Variable Generation Integration Issues: A Scoping Study

Description: This scoping study focuses on the policy issues inherent in the claims made by some Smart Grid proponents that the demand response potential of mass market customers which is enabled by widespread implementation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) through the Smart Grid could be the “silver bullet” for mitigating variable generation integration issues. In terms of approach, we will: identify key issues associated with integrating large amounts of variable generation into the bulk power sy… more

Final Scientific/Technical Report Solar America Initiative: Solar Outreach and Communications

Description: The purpose of the Solar America Initiative: Solar Outreach and Communications grant was to promote better communications among stakeholders; address infrastructure barriers to solar energy; and coordinate with industry, the U.S. Department of Energy, national laboratories, states, cities and counties. The Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC), a non-profit organization formed in 1982, approached this grant project by establishing a wide range of communication and outreach activities inclu… more

CDF Run-II Silicon Detector: Operations and Aging

Description: The CDF Run-II silicon microstrip detector has seen almost 12 fb{sup -1} of proton-antiproton collisions over the last 10 years. It has shown remarkable performance, with 80% of its channels still operating error-free, and only one of its eight layers approaching the operational limits for full depletion. The measured depletion voltage and signal-to-noise ratio of these sensors give unique information about the behavior of sensors irradiated slowly over a long period of time. Data from heavily … more
