D0 Silicon Upgrade: End Calorimeter Transfer Bridge Modification

Description: During the assembly of major components into the D0 Detector, a transfer bridge was required to move the North-End Calorimeter from the clean room, over the cable bridge and onto the north sidewalk of the assembly hall. This experiment is now at the beginning stages of the next phase, namely the upgrade of this Detector for future physics research. A major piece of this upgrade is the installation of a solenoid magnet into the Central Calorimeter. In order to accomplish this, the South End Calor… more

Pressure fluctuations as a diagnostic tool for fluidized beds. Technical progress report, April 1--June 30, 1996

Description: The pressure fluctuations in the transition regime between bubbling fluidization and fast fluidization were investigated using system identification techniques. The results show that the voidage waves and surface eruption effects seen in bubbling fluidized beds are also observed in the transition regime fluctuations. In addition, a third frequency phenomenon is observed in the spectrum which is hypothesized to be a surface wave phenomenon analogous to surface waves in water. The validity of pre… more

Extension of Studies with 3M Empore TM and Selentec MAG *SEP SM Technologies for Improved Radionuclide Field Sampling

Description: The Savannah River Technology Center is evaluating new field sampling methodologies to more easily determine concentrations of radionuclides in aqueous systems. One methodology studied makes use of 3M EmporeTM disks. The disks are composed of selective resins embedded in a Teflon support. The disks remove the ion of interest from aqueous solutions when the solution is passed through the disk. The disk can then be counted directly to quantify the isotope of interest. Four types of disks were stu… more

Radiolysis of actinides and technetium in alkaline media

Description: The {gamma}-radiolysis of aerated alkaline aqueous solutions of Np(V), Np(VI), Pu(VI), Tc(IV), Tc(V), and TC(VII) was studied in the absence of additives and in the presence of CO{sub 3}{sup 2-}, NO{sub 3}{sup -}, NO{sub 2}{sup -}, EDTA, formate, and other organic compounds. The radiolytic reduction of Np(V), Np(VI), Pu(VI), and TC(VII) under different experimental conditions was examined in detail. The addition of EDTA, formate, and alcohols was found to considerably increase the radiation-che… more

Flammable gas and steam release controls for WRSS operation, project W-320

Description: This report documents operational controls to be incorporated into the Process Control Plan for Project W-320, Tank 241-C-106(C-106) Sluicing. The controls are based upon various technical analyses regarding prevention of potential hazards formed by uncontrolled releases of flammable gas or steam from the wastes contained within the Waste Retrieval Sluicing System. The retrieval approach calls for the sequenced removal of waste from tank C-106 in volume increments of 25, 000 gallons. A holding … more

High heat generation safety issue in tank 241-C-106

Description: A `White` paper was written on the High Heat Generation Safety Issue in Tank 241-C-106. The issue is if tank 241-C-106 should start leaking, the lack of alternative cooling methods will require continued addition of water and thereby possibly increase the amount of leakage to the ground. If the current methods of cooling the tank are stopped, the sludge and concrete structure will heat to temperatures greater than established limits and may cause structural damage, leading to dome collapse and … more
