[Letter from R. William McCarter to Lani Duke and Elliot Eisner, March 10, 1997]

Description: A letter from R. William McCarter, Co-director, North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, to Lani Duke, Director, The Getty Education Institute for the Arts, and Elliot Eisner, Professor of Education and Art, Stanford University, about addressing some observations from the National Curriculum Working Group meeting. The observations include fear that the group is restricting the previous efforts of the Curriculum Task Force, the relationship between the Task Force and Working Group… more

Developing beam phasing on the Nova laser

Description: We are presently adding the capability to irradiate indirectly-driven Nova targets with two rings of illumination inside each end of the hohlraum for studies of time-dependent second Legendre (P2) and time- integrated fourth Legendre (P4) flux asymmetry control. The rings will be formed with specially designed kinoform phase plates (KPPs), which will direct each half of each beam into two separate rings that are nearly uniform azimuthally. The timing and temporal pulse shape of the outer rings … more

Advanced biochemical processes for geothermal brines current developments

Description: A research program at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) which deals with the development and application of processes for the treatment of geothermal brines and sludges has led to the identification and design of cost-efficient and environmentally friendly treatment methodology. Initially the primary goal of the processing was to convert geothermal wastes into disposable materials whose chemical composition would satisfy environmental regulations. An expansion of the R&D effort allowed to id… more

Radiotoxicity of neptunium(V) and neptunium(V)-nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) complexes towards Chelatobacter heintzii

Description: The objective of this work was to investigate the toxicity mechanisms of neptunium and the neptunium-NTA complex towards Chelatobacter heintzii. The results show that metal toxicity of aquo NpO{sub 2}{sup +} may significantly limit growth of Cl heintzii at free metal ion concentrations greater than {approx} 10{sup {minus}5} M. However, neptunium concentrations {ge} 10{sup {minus}4} M do not cause measurable radiotoxicity effects in C. heintzii when present in the form of a neptunium-NTA complex… more

Report on inspection of the performance based incentive program at the Richland Operations Office

Description: The Fiscal Year (FY) 1995 Performance Based Incentive (PBI) Program at the Department of Energy`s (DOE) Richland Operations Office (Richland) was initiated by Richland as one part of the broader DOE Contract Reform Initiative being implemented at the Hanford Site in FY 1995. This program was identified as an area of concern by the Office of Inspections as a result of previous inspection work. Specifically, during a limited review of the construction of an Effluent Treatment Facility at the Hanf… more

Gain saturation studies in LG-750 and LG-770 amplifier glass

Description: Experiments were performed on the 100-J class Optical Sciences Laser (OSL) at LLNL to characterize the saturation fluence and small-signal gain of a solid-state Nd:glass amplifier utilizing LG-750 and LG-770, an amplifier glass developed for the National Ignition Facility (NIF). These high quality measurements of gain saturation at NIF level fluences, i.e., 10-15 J/cm{sup 2}, provide essential parameters for the amplifier performance codes used to design NIF and future high power laser systems.… more

Forest response to CO{sub 2} enrichment: Physiology and ecology of loblolly pine

Description: This report covers the results of a long-term project with the primary objective of developing and testing hypotheses on the environmental and physiological controls of loblolly pine response to atmospheric CO{sub 2} enrichment. Earlier research under DOE funding had provided information from loblolly pine and other plant species which allowed the development of specific hypotheses. Phase 1 of this research was a two year pot study of loblolly seedlings to determine the interaction of CO{sub 2}… more

Condensation induced water hammer safety

Description: Condensation induced water hammer events in piping systems can cause catastrophic steam system failures which can result in equipment damage, personal injury, and even death. As an industry, we have learned to become accustomed to the ''banging'' that we often hear in our steam piping systems, and complacent in our actions to prevent it. It is unfortunate that lives are lost needlessly, as this type of water hammer event is preventable if one only applies some basic principles when operating an… more

Methane coupling by membrane reactor. Quarterly technical progress report, September 25--December 24, 1996

Description: A new catalyst, 1.9%(wt) Mn-5%(wt) Na{sub 2}WO{sub 4}/SiO{sub 2} was synthesized by the incipient wetness impregnation method. X-ray diffraction studies of the catalyst calcined at 800 C showed that cristobalite, Na{sub 2}WO{sub 4}, and Mn{sub 2}O{sub 3} were the three phases that coexisted in the catalyst. Calcination at 1,000 C resulted in the formation of a new SiO{sub 2} phase (tridymite). The new catalyst was characterized by running the methane oxidative coupling reactions in a convention… more
