RHIC IR Quadrupoles and Field Quality State of the Art in Super Conducting Accelerator Magnets

Description: The interaction region (IR) quadrupoles [1] for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)[2]are the best field quality superconducting magnets ever built for any major accelerator. This field quality is primarily achieved with the help of eight tuning shims [3] that remove the residual errors from a magnet after it is built and tested. These shims overcome the limitations from the typical tolerances in parts and manufacturing. This paper describes the tuning shims and discusses the evolution o… more

Installation of line replaceable units into the National Ignition Facility

Description: In the National Ignition Facility (NIF), currently under design and construction at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), 192 high-power laser beamlines incorporating over 8,000 large optics, are focused onto a target smaller than a dime. The actual laser path will be contained within the Laser Target Area Building (LTAB), but the smaller adjacent building, the Optics Assembly Building, is where the optic modules are assembled and aligned. After the optics are finished in the OAB they … more

BTS Case Study: Prairie Crossing Homes

Description: More than three hundred homes are being built in a northwest Chicago suburb that demonstrate the ''whole house'' design concept. The homes cost approximately the same as competitive houses of the same size but use approximately 50% less energy for heating and cooling.

FAA debris mitigation phase I impact test report

Description: The goal of the study is the accurate prediction of the effect of uncontained engine debris on aircraft structures. This will provide airframe engineers the information required to design for damage mitigation and improved safety. The basis for predictive simulation tools lies in the experimental data, which motivates the initial development and application of codes that can adequately describe past experiments. This in turn validates the predictive capability of the codes to simulate future ex… more

Preserving Alaska's early Cold War legacy.

Description: The US Air Force owns and operates numerous facilities that were constructed during the Cold War era. The end of the Cold War prompted many changes in the operation of these properties: missions changed, facilities were modified, and entire bases were closed or realigned. The widespread downsizing of the US military stimulated concern over the potential loss of properties that had acquired historical value in the context of the Cold War. In response, the US Department of Defense in 1991 initiat… more

THE GENERATION OF 400 MW RF PULSES AT X-BAND USING RESONANT DELAY LINES

Description: We present theory and experimental data for a resonant-delay-line pulse-compression system. The system is fed by two high power klystrons at X-band. The output power is four times bigger than the input power. The system produces flat-top output pulses. The system uses evacuated room-temperature copper delay lines as a means of storing energy. These lines achieved a quality factor greater than 4.3 x 10{sup 5}, with total losses due to external components measured at 4%. We compare theory with ex… more

Development of a GaAs Monolithic Surface Acoustic Wave Integrated Circuit

Description: An oscillator technology using surface acoustic wave delay lines integrated with GaAs MESFET electronics has been developed for GaAs-based integrated microsensor applications. The oscillator consists of a two-port SAW delay line in a feedback loop with a four-stage GaAs MESFET amplifier. Oscillators with frequencies of 470, 350, and 200 MHz have been designed and fabricated. These oscillators are also promising for other RF applications.

Ignitability of DMSO vapors at elevated temperature and reduced pressure

Description: Ignitability of DMSO vapors have been evaluated at 664 mm Hg pressure. The minimum temperature at which the DMSO vapors that are in equilibrium with liquid DMSO has been determined using two types of strong ignition sources. This temperature is 172 F for chemical igniters, and 178 F for spark ignition. Numerous tests have been conducted using controlled intensity sparks to define the shape of the minimum ignition energy curve as a function of temperature. The ignition energies spanned four orde… more

XTX8003 Aging Study Status Report

Description: XTX8003 is an extrudable explosive composed of 80% PETN and 20% Sylgard 182 (polydimethylsiloxane). Knowledge of the aging characteristics of XTX8003 is desired to understand the relationship between chemical and physical changes and performance. This understanding will allow improved assessment of the current state and also projected lifetime of components that contain this material. A literature search revealed few published studies of the aging behavior of XTX8003 or a chemically similar mat… more

Lynx: A High-Resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar

Description: Lynx is a high resolution, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) that has been designed and built by Sandia National Laboratories in collaboration with General Atomics (GA). Although Lynx may be operated on a wide variety of manned and unmanned platforms, it is primarily intended to be fielded on unmanned aerial vehicles. In particular, it may be operated on the Predator, I-GNAT, or Prowler II platforms manufactured by GA Aeronautical Systems, Inc. The Lynx production weight is less than 120 lb. and h… more

Owner Involvement in Construction at a National Laboratory

Description: In a construction project, the contractor and the owner each have a responsibility for ensuring the health and safety of personnel on a project site. The contractor has the responsibility for ensuring that the provisions of OSHA'S safety and health regulations are followed and that the work is conducted in a safe and well thought out manner (Kohn 1996). The owner has a responsibility for disclosing to the contractor those owner-controlled hazards that are present in the work area due to ongoing… more

Evaluation of riser 14 temperature response

Description: The initial sluicing activities of Project WRSS resulted in a two month increase in temperatures as measured by the Riser 14 thermocouple tree of tank 241-C-106. While this increase was anticipated, the maximum temperature was higher than expected. An evaluation was performed to determine if adequate subcooling exists in the waste to continue sluicing activities. It was determined that a minimum of 10 F subcooling exists in the waste and that the higher Riser 14 temperatures were the result of … more

Higher order photon transitions in H-like and He-like ions.

Description: Higher order photon transitions such as M1, M2 and two-photon decay are conveniently studied using highly-charged electron ions. Here we discuss two examples from recent experiments which were done using the ATLAS facility at Argonne National Laboratory. The first is a test of Relativistic Quantum Mechanics involving a precision measurement of the spectral shape of the two-photon decay of the 1s2s{sup 1}S{sub 0} state in He-like nickel and the second is a test of the theory of damping in quantu… more

Fracture Permeability and in Situ Stress in the Dixie Valley, Nevada, Geothermal Reservoir

Description: We have collected and analyzed fracture and fluid flow data from wells both within and outside the producing geothermal reservoir at Dixie Valley. Data from wellbore imaging and flow tests in wells outside the producing field that are not sufficiently hydraulically connected to the reservoir to be of commercial value provide both the necessary control group of fracture populations and an opportunity to test the concepts proposed in this study on a regional, whole-reservoir scale. Results of our… more

Managing environmental information in the age of outsourcing.

Description: As more data gathering, analysis, and tracking tasks are outsourced the need for multiple contractors and military personnel to input, update, access, store, and track Mormation is becoming critical to efficient functioning and managing of environmental projects and programs at military installations. This paper presents two case studies detailing the way two organizations--the Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA) in Colorado, and the 611th Air Support Group (611 ASG) in Alaska--are managing complex da… more
