Development of integrated mechanistically-based degradation-mode models for performance assessment of high-level waste containers

Description: A key component of the Engineered Barrier System (EBS) being designed for containment of spent-fuel and high-level waste at the proposed geological repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada is a two-layer canister. In this particular design, the inner barrier is made of a corrosion resistant material (CRM) such as Alloy 825, 625 or C-22, while the outer barrier is made of a corrosion-allowance material (CAM) such as A516 Gr 55, a carbon steel, or Monel 400. At the present time, Alloy C-22 and A516 G… more

Simulation of damage evolution and accumulation in vanadium

Description: Energetic atoms which have been knocked off their lattice sites by neutron or ion irradiation leave a trail of vacancies and interstitials in their wake. Most of these defects recombine with their opposites within their own collision cascade. Some fraction, however, escape to become freely migrating defects (FMD) in the bulk of the material. The interaction of FMD with the microstructure has long been linked to changes in the macroscopic properties of materials under irradiation. We calculate t… more

Beam tests of the 12 MHz RFQ RIB injector for ATLAS.

Description: In recent tests without beam, the Argonne 12 MHz split-coaxial radio-frequency quadruple (RFQ) achieved a cw intervane voltage of more than 100 kV, the design operating voltage for the device. This voltage is sufficient for the RFQ to function as the first stage of a RIB injector for the Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System (ATLAS). Previously reported beam dynamics calculations for the structure predict longitudinal emittance growth of only a few keV{center_dot}ns for beams of mass 132 and… more

Numerical relativity in a distributed environment.

Description: We have found that the hardware and software infrastructure exists to simulate general relativity problems in a distributed computational environment, at some cost in performance. We examine two different issues for running the Cactus code in such a distributed environment The first issue is running a Cactus simulation on multiple parallel computer systems. Our objective is to perform larger simulations than are currently possible on a single parallel computer. We distribute Cactus simulations … more

Nitrogen Implantation Effects on the Chemical Bonding and Hardness of Boron and Boron Nitride Coatings

Description: Boron nitride (BN) coatings are deposited by the reactive sputtering of fully dense, boron (B) targets utilizing an argon-nitrogen (Ar-N{sub 2}) reactive gas mixture. Near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure analysis reveals features of chemical bonding in the B 1s photoabsorption spectrum. Hardness is measured at the film surface using nanoindentation. The BN coatings prepared at low, sputter gas pressure with substrate heating are found to have bonding characteristic of a defected hexagonal … more

Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996: Overview of P.L. 104-182

Description: The 104th Congress made extensive changes to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) with the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996 (P.L. 104-182), bringing to a close a multi-year effort to amend a statute that was widely criticized as having too little flexibility, too many unfunded mandates, and an arduous but unfocused regulatory schedule. Among the many changes to the SDWA, the 1996 amendments added provisions to provide funding to communities for drinking water madates, focus regulatory e… more

MeshTV: scientific visualization and graphical analysis software

Description: The increasing data complexity engendered by the Accelerated Scientific Computing Initiative (ASCI) requires more capability in our scientific visualization software. B Division at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) addresses these new and changing requirements with MeshTV. We began work on MeshTV around eight years ago, and have progressively refined the software to provide improved scientific analysis and visualization to well over 100 users at Liver-more, Los Alamos, Sandia, and i… more

(6)Li, (7)Li Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Investigation of Lithium Coordination in Binary Phosphate Glasses

Description: {sup 6}Li and {sup 7}Li solid state magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been used to investigate the local coordination environment of lithium in a series of xLi{sub 2}O {center_dot} (1-x)P{sub 2}O{sub 5} glasses, where 0.05 {le} x {le} 0.55. Both the {sup 6}Li and {sup 7}Li show chemical shift variations with changes in the Li{sub 2}O concentration, but the observed {sup 6}Li NMR chemical shifts closely approximate the true isotropic chemical shift and … more

Effects of Fuel Ethanol Use on Fuel-Cycle Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Description: We estimated the effects on per-vehicle-mile fuel-cycle petroleum use, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and energy use of using ethanol blended with gasoline in a mid-size passenger car, compared with the effects of using gasoline in the same car. Our analysis includes petroleum use, energy use, and emissions associated with chemicals manufacturing, farming of corn and biomass, ethanol production, and ethanol combustion for ethanol; and petroleum use, energy use, and emissions associated with pe… more

Protein Structure Prediction with Evolutionary Algorithms

Description: Evolutionary algorithms have been successfully applied to a variety of molecular structure prediction problems. In this paper we reconsider the design of genetic algorithms that have been applied to a simple protein structure prediction problem. Our analysis considers the impact of several algorithmic factors for this problem: the confirmational representation, the energy formulation and the way in which infeasible conformations are penalized, Further we empirically evaluated the impact of thes… more

Bilinear System Characteristics from Nonlinear Time Series Analysis

Description: Detection of changes in the resonant frequencies and mode shapes of a system is a fundamental problem in dynamics. This paper describes a time series method of detecting and quantifying changes in these parameters for a ten degree-of-freedom bilinear system excited by narrow band random noise. The method partitions the state space and computes mode frequencies and mode shapes for each region. Different regions of the space may exhibit different mode shapes, allowing diagnosis of stiffness chang… more

A Validation of Bayesian Finite Element Model Updating for Linear Dynamics

Description: This work addresses the issue of statistical model updating and correlation. The updating procedure is formulated to improve the predictive quality of a structural model by minimizing out-of-balance modal forces. It is shown how measurement and modeling uncertainties can be taken into account to provide not only the correlated model but also the associated confidence levels. Hence, a Bayesian parameter estimation technique is derived and its numerical implementation is discussed. Two demonstrat… more

Preliminary level 2 specification for the nested, fixed-depth sampling system

Description: This preliminary Level 2 Component Specification establishes the performance, design, development, and test requirements for the in-tank sampling system which will support the BNFL contract in the final disposal of Hanford's High Level Wastes (HLW) and Low Activity Wastes (LAW). The PHMC will provide Low Activity Wastes (LAW) tank wastes for final treatment by BNFL from double-shell feed tanks. Concerns about the inability of the baseline ''grab'' sampling to provide large volume samples within… more
