Electroplated Metals on Uranium for Aluminum Cladding

Description: Abstract: "Aluminum-clad nickel-plated uranium is corrosion resistant in boiling water. Samples with intentional defects in the aluminum-nickel clodding layers, after testing for more than 300 hr. showed no sign of rapid failure. The study of electroplated metals on uranium for aluminum cladding has defined the effects of several processing variables on the corrosion resistance. The quality of the uranium and the quality of the aluminum-nickel bond were important. Heat treatment and vacuum outg… more

The Design of a Pulsed Magnetic Field Coil for Table Top 1

Description: Abstract: "A cylindrical coil has been designed for pulsed field operation suitable for use in a model thermonuclear reactor. The coil has an eight-inch inside diameter and a length of fifty-one inches. Magnetic mirrors at the ends consist of double-layer solenoids six and one-half inches long designed to slip over the main coil. Subsequent models of this coil have been fabricated which improved the electrical insulation provided by the bonding materials and the mechanical rigidity of the coil.… more

Extraction of Americium Nitrate with Tributyl Phosphate

Description: The extraction of americium nitrate with tributyl phosphate has been investigated for aqueous solutions containing sodium nitrate and nitric acid. Americium nitrate is found in the organic phase as free molecules or ions and as the complex (Am(NO3)3. Aqueous solutions containing nitric acid introduce a competitive factor through the formation of the TBP-KNO3 complex in the solvent layer. In addition. americium nitrate is complexed in the aqueous phase by nitric acid.

A Cost Analysis of the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant

Description: A capital cost breakdown of the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant, a directly maintained remotely operated plant for processing spent enriched uranium fuel assemblies from reactors, is presented. The capital investment in the plant, including design, construction, training, and preoperational costs, an estimate of the direct costs incurred by the Atomic Energy Commission, and a proportional part of the costs of Central Facilities, including the value of the land and improvements theorem when acqu… more
