Heavy Neutral Beam Probe for Edge Plasma Analysis in Tokamaks

Description: The Heavy Neutral Beam Probe (HNBP) developed initially with DOE funding under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program was installed on the Tokamak de Varennes (TdeV) at the CCFM. This diagnostic was designed to perform fundamental measurements of edge plasma properties. The hardware was capable of measuring electron density and potential profiles with high spatial and temporal resolution. Fluctuation spectra for these parameters were obtained with HNBP for transport studies.

Slicing of silicon ingots with reduced kerf. Final report (Phase II)

Description: The Fixed Abrasive Slicing Technique (FAST) has been developed as an effective wafering technique by combining the advantages of diamond as an abrasive like internal diamond (ID), a reciprocating bladehead as in Multi-Blade Slurry (MBS) and wire slicing as in multiwire slicing (MWS) techniques. During the development stage, it was necessary to develop a slicer, bladepacks and the technique. It was recognized that high pressures were required between the diamond abrasive and the crystal to achie… more

In-Process Detection of Weld Defects Using Laser-Based Ultrasonic Lamb Waves

Description: Laser-based ultrasonic (LBU) measurement shows great promise for on-line monitoring of weld quality in tailor-welded blanks. Tailor-welded blanks are steel blanks made from plates of differing thickness and/or properties butt-welded together; they are used in automobile manufacturing to produce body, frame, and closure panels. LBU uses a pulsed laser to generate the ultrasound and a continuous wave (CW) laser interferometer to detect the ultrasound at the point of interrogation to perform ultra… more

Implicit solution of large-scale radiation diffusion problems

Description: In this paper, we present an efficient solution approach for fully implicit, large-scale, nonlinear radiation diffusion problems. The fully implicit approach is compared to a semi-implicit solution method. Accuracy and efficiency are shown to be better for the fully implicit method on both one- and three-dimensional problems with tabular opacities taken from the LEOS opacity library.

Laser source for the (gamma)-(gamma) Collider

Description: The Next Linear Collider (NLC) offers an opportunity to use high energy photon collisions to probe basic particle structures. The production of high energy gammas from collisions between the NLC high energy electrons and low energy photons places difficult requirements on the laser low energy photon source [1]. The photon wavelength must be approximately one micron since longer wavelengths will decrease the electron utilization efficiency, and shorter wavelengths will open a loss channel for ga… more

Are multiple runs better than one?

Description: This paper investigates whether it is better to use a certain constant amount of computational resources in a single run with a large population, or in multiple runs with smaller populations. The paper presents the primary tradeoffs involved in this problem and identifies the conditions under which there is an advantage to use multiple small runs. The paper uses an existing model that relates the quality of the solutions reached by a GA with its population size. The results suggest that in most… more

Electricity Restructuring: The Implications for Air Quality

Description: This paper reviews the changed now underway in the utility industry from the perspective of their environmental implications specifically, the potential for electric utility restructuring to increase emissions of air pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act(CAA) and of greenhouse gases that could be affected by the Kyoto agreement to address climate change.

Modifications to LLNL Plutonium Packaging Systems (PuPS) to achieve ASME VIII UW-13.2(d) Requirements for the DOE Standard 3013-00 Outer Can Weld

Description: The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Plutonium Packaging System (PuPS) prepares packages to meet the DOE Standard 3013 (Reference 1). The PuPS equipment was supplied by the British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL). The DOE Standard 3013 requires that the welding of the Outer Can meets ASME Section VIII Division 1 (Reference 2). ASME Section VIII references to ASME Section IX (Reference 3) for most of the welding requirements, but UW-13.2 (d) of Section VIII requires a certain depth and… more

Can we distinguish an MSSM higgs from a SM higgs at a linear collider?

Description: The authors study the prospects for distinguishing the CP-even Higgs boson of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) from the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson by measuring its branching ratios at an e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} linear collider. The regions of the M{sub A} - tan {beta} plane in which an MSSM Higgs boson can be distinguished from the SM Higgs boson depend strongly upon the supersymmetric parameters that enter the radiative corrections to the Higgs mass matrix … more

Comparison of Sampling Methods to Determine Total and Speciated Mercury in Flue Gas, CRADA 00-F038 Final Report

Description: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and Frontier Geosciences, Inc. (FGS) collaborated in the investigation of sampling techniques that measure total and speciated forms of mercury (Hg) in flue gas. The FGS techniques investigated are referred to as the Frontier Sorbent Mercury Speciation (FSMS) method and the Sorbent Total Mercury (STM) method (Prestbo et al. 2001). Testing was conducted over five consecutive days during the week of March 27, 2000, o… more

Double alpha MEBT for H{sup {minus}} beam

Description: This note describes simulation studies of the H{sup {minus}} beam matching condition between a 750keV rod radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) and the existing Fermilab drift tube linac (DTL). The RFQ design used in this study is that of an existing RFQ designed and built by A. Schempp from IAP-Goethe University. It is assumed that the medium-energy beam transport (MEBT) line uses hardware built for a positron emission tomography (PET) project. The MEBT is made out of two Alpha magnets and seven qu… more

Electricity Restructuring: The Implications for Air Quality

Description: In the context of federal and state proposals to restructure the electric utility industry, this paper analyzes forces and policies affecting utility generation that may have consequences for emissions of air pollutants and of greenhouse gases. Key concerns are potential increases in nitrogen oxide emissions, raising questions about the effectiveness of the Clean Air Act to regulate a restructured industry, and in carbon dioxide emissions, which are not currently regulated but could be if the U… more
