Centrifugal Atomization of Lanthanide Materials for Cryogenic Coolers

Description: Until recently, Pb was the preferred heat exchanger matrix material used in low temperature cryocoolers; however, the heat capacity of Pb drops drastically below {approximately}15K and new matrix materials based on the lanthanide elements have been developed. These materials magnetically order at low temperatures and the entropy change associated with ordering contributes to the materials` heat capacities. The drawback to widespread use of lanthanide intermetallic compounds in cryocoolers has b… more

X-band microwave backscattering from ocean waves

Description: Backscattering experiments at microwave frequencies were conducted off the west coast of Scotland in the summer of 1991. Using a dual-polarization, 8-frequency X-band coherent scatterometer mounted on the bow of a boat, we measured time-resolved backscattering from ocean waves at a range of grazing angles from 10{degrees} to 70{degrees}. From the grazing-angle-dependent signals and their Doppler spectra, we differentiate Bragg scattering from non-Bragg scattering and resolve ``peak separation``… more

Low frequency ultrasonic nondestructive inspection of aluminum/adhesive fuselage lap splices

Description: This thesis is a collection of research efforts in ultrasonics, conducted at the Center for Aviation Systems Reliability located at Iowa State University, as part of the Federal Aviation Administration`s ``Aging Aircraft Program.`` The research was directed toward the development of an ultrasonic prototype to inspect the aluminum/adhesive fuselage lap splices found on 1970`s vintage Boeing passenger aircraft. The ultrasonic prototype consists of a normal incidence, low frequency inspection tech… more

Boron and hydrogen in Ni{sub 3}Al: Part 2, Mechanical testing of bicrystals

Description: To provide a sensitive measurement of the effect of boron segregation on the strength and ductility of Ni{sub 3}Al grain boundaries, bicrystal tensile tests were performed on small specimens of boron doped Ni{sub 76}Al{sub 24} cut from extremely large-grained boules. Five specimens with the same ``random`` or low-symmetry grain boundary (disorientations measured by means of backscattered Kikuchi patterns) and two specimens with a second random grain boundary were tested in quenched and slow-coo… more

Ground penetrating radar coal measurements demonstration at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Research Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Final report

Description: In situ and near real-time measurements of coal seam thickness have been identified by industry as a highly desirable component of robotic mining systems. With it, a continuous mining machine can be guided close to the varying boundary of the seam while the cutting operation is underway. This provides the mining operation the ability to leave behind the high-sulfur, high-particulate coal which is concentrated near the seam boundary. The result is near total recovery of high quality coal resourc… more

Studies of high temperature ternary phases in mixed-metal-rich early transition metal sulfide and phosphide systems

Description: Investigations of ternary mixed early transition metal-rich sulfide and phosphide systems resulted in the discovery of new structures and new phases. A new series of Zr and Hf - group V transition metal - sulfur K-phases was synthesized and crystallographically characterized. When the group V transition metal was Nb or Ta, the unit cell volume was larger than any previously reported K-phase. The presence of adventitious oxygen was determined in two K-phases through a combination of neutron scat… more

Studies on the Optimization of Deformation Processed Metal Metal Matrix Composites

Description: A methodology for the production of deformation processed metal metal matrix composites from hyper-eutectic copper-chromium alloys was developed. This methodology was derived from a basic study of the precipitation phenomena in these alloys encompassing evaluation of microstructural, electrical, and mechanical properties. The methodology developed produces material with a superior combination of electrical and mechanical properties compared to those presently available in commercial alloys. New… more

Data validation report for the 100-D Ponds Operable Unit: 100-D ponds sampling

Description: Westinghouse-Hanford has requested that 100 percent of the Sample Delivery Groups be validated for the 100-D Ponds Operable Unit Sampling Investigation. Therefore the data from the chemical analysis of all 30 samples from this sampling event and their related quality assurance samples were reviewed and validated to verify that reported sample results were of sufficient quality to support decisions regarding remedial actions performed at this site.

Discretization of a model for the formation of longshore sand ridges

Description: This paper presents and evaluates the numerical solution of a coupled system of equations that arises in a model for the formation and evolution of three-dimensional longshore sand ridges. The model is based on the interaction between surficial or internal weakly nonlinear shallow-water waves, having weak spanwise spatial dependence, and the deformable bottom topography. The presentation of the details concerning the discretization of the model is primarily motivated by two facts: (1) The model… more

CONDENSING ECONOMIZERS FOR SMALL COAL-FIRED BOILERS AND FURNACES PROJECT REPORT - JANUARY 1994

Description: Condensing economizers increase the thermal efficiency of boilers by recovering sensible and latent heat from exhaust gas. These economizers are currently being used commercially for this purpose in a wide range of applications. Performance is dependent upon application-specific factors affecting the utility of recovered heat. With the addition of a condensing economizer boiler efficiency improvements up to 10% are possible. Condensing economizers can also capture flue gas particulates. In this… more
