Interactions of Uranium and Neptunium with Cementitious Materials Studied by XAFS

Description: We have investigated the interaction of U(VI) and Np(V) actinide ions with cementitious materials that are relevant to nuclear waste repositories using X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) Spectroscopy. The actinide ions were individually loaded onto untreated as well as hydrothermally treated cements. The mixtures were then equilibrated at varying pH's for a period of approximately 6 months. In all cases uranium was introduced in the form of aqueous uranyl ion, UO{sub 2}{sup 2+}, and was obs… more

Interface Control Document Between the Double Shell Tanks (DST) System and the Plutonium Finishing Plan (PFP)

Description: This document identifies the requirements and responsibilities for all parties to support waste transfer from the Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP) facility to the Double-Shell Tank (DST) System of the River Protection Project (RPP). This Interface Control Document (ICD) will not attempt to control the physical portion of this interface because the physical equipment making up this interface, and any associated interface requirements, are already in place, operational and governed by existing ope… more

Exploring the Limits to NIF Capsule Coupling

Description: Our original ignition ''point designs'' (circa 1992) for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) were made energetically conservative to provide margin for uncertainties in laser absorption, x-ray conversion efficiency and hohlraum-capsule coupling. Since that time, extensive experiments on Nova and Omega and their related analysis indicate that NIF coupling efficiency may be almost ''as good as we could hope for''. Given close agreement between experiment and theory/modeling, we can credibly expl… more

Waste Receiving and Processing (WRAP) Facility Public Address System Review Findings

Description: Public address system operation at the Waste Receiving and Processing (WRAP) facility was reviewed. The review was based on an Operational Readiness Review finding that public address performance was not adequate in parts of the WRAP facility. Several improvements were made to the WRAP Public Address (PA) system to correct the deficiencies noted. Speaker gain and position was optimized. A speech processor was installed to boost intelligibility in high noise areas. Additional speakers were added… more

Software recycling at the Hanford Site

Description: The Hanford Site was the first Department of Energy (DOE) complex to recycle excess software rather than dispose of it in the landfill. This plan, which took over a year to complete, was reviewed for potential legal conflicts, which could arise from recycling rather than disposal of software. It was determined that recycling was an approved method of destruction and therefore did not conflict with any of the licensing agreements that Hanford had with the software manufacturers. The Hanford Recy… more

Characteristics of ICF Relevant Hohlraums Driven by X-Rays from a Z-Pinch

Description: Radiation environments characteristic of those encountered during the low-temperature foot pulse and subsequent higher-temperature early-step pulses (without the foot pulse) required for indirect-drive ICF ignition on the National ignition Facility have been produced in hohlraums driven by x-rays from a z-pinch. These environments provide a platform to better understand the dynamics of full-scale NIF hohlraums, ablator material, and capsules prior to NIF completion. Radiation temperature, plasm… more

West Hackberry Tertiary Project

Description: The West Hackberry Tertiary Project is a field test of the concept that air injection can generate tertiary oil recovery through the Double Displacement Process. The Double Displacement Process is the gas displacement of a water invaded oil column for the purpose of recovering tertiary oil through gravity drainage. The novel aspect of this project is the use of air as the injection fluid. In Gulf Coast oil reservoirs with pronounced bed dip, reservoir performance has shown that gravity drainage… more

Cost-Effective Remediation of Depleted Uranium (DU) at Environmental Restoration Sites

Description: Numerous sites in the United States and around the world are contaminated with depleted uranium (DU) in various forms. A prevalent form is fragmented DU originating from various scientific tests involving high explosives and DU during weapon-development programs, at firing practice ranges, or in war theaters where DU was used in armor-piercing projectiles. The contamination at these sites is typically very heterogeneous, with discrete, visually identifiable DU fragments mixed with native soil. … more

Sandia National Laboratories: The First Fifty Years

Description: On Nov. 1, 1999, Sandia National Laboratories celebrates its 50th birthday. Although Sandia has its roots in the World War II-era Manhattan Project, Sandia began operating as a separate nuclear weapons engineering laboratory under the management of AT&T on Nov. 1, 1949. Today the lab employs more than 7,000 people at its two sites in Albuquerque and Livermore, California, and has research and development missions in national security, energy and environmental technologies, and U.S. economic… more

InGaAsN/AlGaAs Pnp Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor

Description: The authors have demonstrated a functional Pnp heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) using InGaAsN. The metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOCVD) grown Al{sub 0.3}Ga{sub 0.7}As/In{sub 0.03}Ga{sub 0.97}As{sub 0.99}N{sub 0.01} HBT takes advantage of the narrower bandgap energy (E{sub g} = 1.25eV) of In{sub 0.03}Ga{sub 0.97}As{sub 0.99}N{sub 0.01}, which is lattice matched to GaAs. NEP for a Kuiper Belt Object Rendezvous Mission

Description: Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) are a recently-discovered set of solar system bodies which lie at about the orbit of Pluto (40 AU) out to about 100 astronomical units (AU). There are estimated to be about 100,000 KBOS with a diameter greater than 100 km. KBOS are postulated to be composed of the pristine material which formed our solar system and may even have organic materials in them. A detailed study of KBO size, orbit distribution, structure, and surface composition could shed light on the origi… more

Chemical and Physical Changes in a Hydrolyzed Poly(ester urethane)

Description: Hydrolytic degradation has been shown to be a significant problem for poly(ester urethane) elastomers exposed to high humidity environments. The ester group in the soft segment is particularly susceptible to hydrolysis. One of the products of this reaction is a carboxylic acid group that catalyses further hydrolysis. The resulting reduction in molecular weight leads to deterioration of the elastomer's mechanical properties. In this paper we have measured the extent of the hydrolysis reaction by… more

Process for combined control of mercury and nitric oxide.

Description: Continuing concern about the effects of mercury in the environment may lead to requirements for the control of mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants. If such controls are mandated, the use of existing flue-gas cleanup systems, such as wet scrubbers currently employed for flue-gas desulfurization, would be desirable, Such scrubbers have been shown to be effective for capturing oxidized forms of mercury, but cannot capture the very insoluble elemental mercury (Hg{sup 0}) that can form a … more
