Distributed drift chamber design for rare particle detection in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Description: This report describes a multi-plane drift chamber that was designed and constructed to function as a topological detector for the BNL AGSE896 rare particle experiment. The chamber was optimized for good spatial resolution, two track separation, and a high uniform efficiency while operating in a 1.6 Tesla magnetic field and subjected to long term exposure from a 11.6 GeV/nucleon beam of 10**6 Au ions per second.

Ion flux from vacuum arc cathode spots in the absence and presence of a magnetic field

Description: Because plasma production at vacuum cathode spots is approximately proportional to the arc current, arc current modulation can be used to generate ion current modulation that can be detected far from the spot using a negatively biased ion collector. The drift time to the ion detector can used to determine kinetic ion energies. A very wide range of cathode materials have been used. It has been found that the kinetic ion energy is higher at the beginning of each discharge and approximately consta… more

Mechanical property testing of irradiated zircaloy cladding under reactor transient conditions.

Description: Specimen geometries have been developed to determine the mechanical properties of irradiated Zircaloy cladding subjected to the mechanical conditions and temperatures associated with reactivity-initiated accidents (RIA) and loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCA). Miniature ring-stretch specimens were designed to induce both uniaxial and plane-strain states of stress in the transverse (hoop) direction of the cladding. Also, longitudinal tube specimens were also designed to determine the constitutive p… more

Plasma Diagnostics in High Resolution X-Ray Spectra of Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables

Description: Using the Chandra HETG spectrum of EX Hya as an example, we discuss some of the plasma diagnostics available in high-resolution X-ray spectra of magnetic cataclysmic variables. Specifically, for conditions appropriate to collisional ionization equilibrium plasmas, we discuss the temperature dependence of the H- to He-like line intensity ratios and the density and photoexcitation dependence of the He-like R line ratios and the Fe XVII I(17.10 {angstrom})/I(17.05 {angstrom}) line ratio. We show t… more

Thermodynamic Modeling of the SRS Evaporators: Part II. The 3H System

Description: Accumulations of two solid phases have formed scale deposits in the Savannah River Site 2H Evaporator system since late 1996. The aluminosilicate scale deposits caused the evaporator pot to become inoperable in October 1999. Accumulations of the diuranate phase have caused criticality concerns in the SRS 2H Evaporator. In order to ensure that similar deposits are not and will not form in the SRS 3H Evaporator, thermodynamically derived activity diagrams specific to the feeds processed from Tank… more

Li Diffusion and High-Voltage Cycling Behavior of Thin-Film LiCoO2 Cathodes

Description: Mass transport and thermodynamic properties of Li{sub x}CoO{sub 2} were studied by the potentiostatic intermittent titration technique (PITT) using solid-state thin-film batteries that provide a well-defined diffusion geometry. Both the chemical diffusion coefficient and the thermodynamic factor have minima at the phase boundaries of the Li/vacancy ordered phase ''Li{sub 0.5}CoO{sub 2}''. The self-diffusion coefficient of Li has a minimum at x = 0.5 associated with the Li/vacancy ordering. As t… more

Design of Metal Hydride Vessels for Processing Tritium

Description: Metal hydrides offer safe, compact and efficient ways to process tritium in areas including storage, pumping, compression, transportation and purification. Westinghouse at Savannah River Site in USA has developed and implemented metal hydride based technology for various tritium applications over the past 20 years. This paper presents our experience in designing different types of metal hydride vessels for tritium processing.

Impact of the Low-Temperature Reactivity of Reillex(TM) HPQ on Actinide Processing

Description: Reactive System Screening Tool(TM) data and a computational model are used to predict the impact of pressurization on a typical process-scale ion exchange column due to gases generated by a low temperature exothermic reaction (LTE). The LTE results from a reaction between nitric acid and the ethylbenzene pendant groups of the Reillex(TM) HPQ resin. This reaction would occur if the resin bed were inadvertently heated above 70 degrees C.

Organic Dye Effects on DNAPL Entry Pressure in Water Saturated Porous Media

Description: One of three diazo dyes with the same fundamental structure have been used in most studies of DNAPL behavior in porous media to stain the NAPL: Sudan III, Sudan IV, or Oil-Red-O. The dyes are generally implicitly assumed to not influence DNAPL behavior. That assumption was tested using simple entry pressure experiments.
