Development of high-specific-energy batteries for electric vehicles. Progress report, February 1973--July 1973

Description: A high-specific-energy lithium/sulfur battery having the performance characteristics required for powering pollutionfree automobiles is described. The cells currently under development have negative electrodes of molten lithium and positive electrodes of sulfur (plus an additive to reduce the sulfur vapor pressure) separated by a molten lithium halide-containing electrolyte. The operating temperature of the cells is about 400 deg C. The performance goals for a single cell include a capacity den… more

Voltage holding considerations for direct-collection units

Description: Results have been obtained from initial experiments designed to study high-voltage breakdown under conditions of importance to the design of direct- collection units. A coaxial configuration was used to mock-up critical fields near grid wires. With appropriate heat conditioning, fields as high as 9.6 x 10/ sup 5/ V/cm were maintained at the surface of a 7-mil-diam tungsten wire. This represents an enhanced field of ~10/sup 8/V/cm at whisker'' sites. Breakdown criteria are proposed for three reg… more

''Ideal'' directly executed languages: an analytical argument for emulation

Description: Several methods of evaluating user programs are analyzed with respect to space and time requirements. The concept of an ideal'' directly executed language is introduced, and it is argued that the ideal'' directly executed language for a contemporary computing system will not be either its source language or the language accepted by its base machine. Data sheets for PPO radioisotopic fuel

Description: PPO is the acronym for Pure Plutoniunn Oxide. The thermal energy of this fuel results from the radioactive decay of /sup 238/ Pu this energy is converted into usable electric power for space probe or other applications. The basic fuel module associated with the current MHW heat source is a PPO sphere 1.465 plus or minus 0.015 in. in dia and containing 100 plus or minus 2 thermal watts. The spheres are individually encapsulated and then assembled into geometric arrays to form the working heat so… more

ORNL isotopic power fuels quarterly report for period ending September 30, 1973

Description: Heat soak periods were completed on four of the ten sets of compatibility couples which were put on test during the previous quarter. The four sets contain a total of 18 couples. Four couples were examined, and tests on the others are in progress. Examination of the Kilowatt Test Source capsule was completed. Four Cm/sup 203/ceramic couples were examined and additional tests are underway. Materials selection and test conditions were finalized for a 15-couple matrix to be initinted during FY 197… more

2XII Thomson scattering system

Description: A Thomson-scattering system using a 6-joule Q-switched ruby laser and an eight-channel polychromator was constructed and employed to measure electron temperatures and densities at the center of the 2XII mirror confinement experiment. This report discusses experimental considerations used to guide design, construction, alignment, and operation of the Thomson-scattering system. (auth)

Batch system with rapid overlay capabilities

Description: A batch supervisor for a minicomputer has been written which provides rapid sequencinig between jobs. The supervisor can handle a small number of system programs, and also allows each system program to have a large number of overlays. Overlays are read into core rapidly, and the sequencing of overlays and job steps is very flexible. Finally, the supervisor is small, leaving most of the minicomputer's core storage to the system programs. (auth)

EXREM III computer code for estimating external radiation doses to populations from environmental releases

Description: EXREM III is a computer code to estimate the dose equivalent rate and the total dose equivalent from beta, positron, electron, and gamma radintion resulting from submersion in contaminated water, submersion in contaminated air, and exposure to a contaminated surface. There can be more than one environmental release, and exposure can begin at any time after the first release. EXREM III considers contributions from environmental releases and from nuclide decay chains. For a particular problem the… more

High-resolution studies of beta-delayed proton emission in light nuclei

Description: Thesis. Identified protons were observed following beta decay of the precursor nuclei /sup 21/Mg, /sup 25/Si, /sup 37/Ca, /sup 40/Sc, /sup 41/Ti, and / sup 23/Al. These measurements spanned a proton energy range from 600 keV to 8.5 MeV, and included all significant particle decays of these nuclei. A helium-jet transport system was developed and used with various DELTA E - E counter telescopes to obtain high-resolution, lowbackground spectra. These data perrmitted accurate location of proton unb… more
