Search for the Higgs Boson and Technicolor Particles in p anti-p Colisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV

Description: In the Standard Model (SM) of the elementary particles, the interactions among the known fundamental fermions (leptons and quarks) are mediated through gauge bosons which obey the symmetry: SU(3) {circle_times} SU(2) {circle_times} U(1). More precisely, the electroweak interaction [4-6] is described by a gauge symmetry SU(2) {circle_times} U(1) which is broken spontaneously. The electroweak symmetry breaking is implemented by the introduction of a complex scalar Higgs field which has a non-zero… more

Safety Analyses at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory Test Reactor Area - Past to Present

Description: Test reactors are unique in that the core configuration may change with each operating interval. The process of safety analyses for test reactors at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Test Reactor Area has evolved as the computing capabilities, software, and regulatory requirements have changed. The evaluations for experiments and the reactor have moved from measurements in a set configuration and then application to other configurations with a relatively large error to modeling i… more

A superconducting quadrupole array for transport of multiple high current beams

Description: We present a conceptual design of a superconducting quadrupole magnet array for the side-by-side transport of multiple high current particle beams in induction linear accelerators. The magnetic design uses a modified cosine 20 current distribution inside a square cell boundary. Each interior magnet's neighbors serve as the return flux paths and the poles are placed as close as possible to each other to facilitate this. No iron is present in the basic 2-D magnetic design; it will work at any cur… more

Functional genomics, an integrated approach. Final report for the Trieste component

Description: Phage display offers the possibility of selecting polypeptides (and the genes which encode them) from libraries of 10 billion or more different polypeptides on the basis of their abilities to bind target proteins and subdomains. The general principle of phage display relies on the coupling of phenotype and genotype in the phage. The specific aims of this project were threefold: (1) to produce a large phagemid antibody library; (2) to develop a general method for deriving antibodies against the … more

Advanced direct methanol fuel cells. Final report

Description: The goal of the program was an advanced proton-exchange membrane (PEM) for use as the electrolyte in a liquid feed direct methanol fuel cell which provides reduced methanol crossover while simultaneously providing high conductivity and low membrane water content. The approach was to use a membrane containing precross-linked fluorinated base polymer films and subsequently to graft the base film with selected materials. Over 80 different membranes were prepared. The rate of methanol crossover thr… more
