PULSE COLUMN DESIGN

Description: A stagewise approach was used in a theoretical analysis of pulse columns. In the analysis the column was arbitrarily divided into discrete stages comprising that part of the column between two adjacent perforated plates. The operation of the pulse column was described mathematically using material balance equations, and a design method was derived which used two stage lines and two operating lines, one set for the pulse generator upstroke and one set for the downstroke. Assuming equilibrium conā€¦ more

SYSTEMS OF CONSERVATION LAWS

Description: A wide class of difference equations is described for approximating discontinuous time dependent solutions, with prescribed initial data, of hyperbolic systems of nonlinear conservation laws. Among these schemes we determine the best ones, i.e., these which have the smallest truncation error and in which the discontinuities are confined to a narrow band of 2 to 3 meshpoints. These schemes are tested for stability and are found to be stable under a mild strengthening of the CourantFriedrichs-Lewā€¦ more

COMPARISON OF BULK SHIELDING REACTOR CENTERLINE MEASUREMENTS IN WATER WITH PREDICTIONS

Description: Measurements of fast neutron and gamma ray dose rates in water along the centerline of the Bulk Shielding Reactor (BSR) are compared with predictions made by use of three available computer programs. It is found that the predictions are very dependent on the assumptions made concerning power distribution and that the more accurate descriptions of the source lead to predictions that agree with measurements to within 20% throughout thickness ranges as great as 100 centimeters of water. Sodium and Bismuth Liquid Metal Fuel Systems a Literature Search to June 30, 1957

Description: The literature on scdium, NaK, and bismuth liquid metal reactor fuel systems is reviewed to June 30, 1957. The various criteria which have been used for the selection of liquid metal fuel carriers are discussed. Corrosion information on each feel carrier is summarized, and some discussion of the fabricability of components from possible materials of constnuction is included. Work done on the testing of various fuel concepts for each carrier is indicated. (auth)

Studies of the Corrosion of Aisi 304 Stainless Steel and Aisi 4135 Carbon Steel Exposed to Saturated Solutions of Boric Acid

Description: AISI 304 stainless steel and AISI 4135 carbon steel specimens were exposed to five wt.% (70 F) and thirteen wt.% (140 F) boric acid solutions. These are essentially saturation concentrations. After four weeks exposure it was found that the AISI 304 stainless steel was not attacked under these conditions but that the carbon steel had developed considerable corrosion products in the form of scale. It was found that the attack on carbon steel at 70 F in a five wt.% boric acid solution was greatly ā€¦ more

THE CALCULATION OF RADIAL TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTIONS IN CYLINDRICAL FUEL SPECIMENS DURING NEUTRON IRRADIATION. Metallurgy Program 6.1.26

Description: A knowledge of the temperature distribution within a fuel sample during irradiation is required in order to evaluate the changes that occur in the physical and metallurgical propertoies of a fuel material upon irradiation. Because it is often impractical to measure temperatures within a fuel sample during irradiation, it is frequently necessary to rely upon computed values of the temperature. Therefore, a brief description and a comparison of the methods most frequently used for computing radiaā€¦ more

A Study of the Effects of Elevated Temperatures on the Growth and Inheritance of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae

Description: A comparative study was made of the growth of yeast in various media at the optimum temperature (30 ) and at supraoptimum temperatures. It was found that at elevated temperatures there is a decrease in the ability of yeast to grow, which may be alleviated by increasing the percentage of yeast extract in the medium, adding oleic acid to the medium, or using an inoculum of cells that have previously been grown at the elevated temperature. Because of these findings, it is believed that growth at eā€¦ more

Remote Radiological Monitoring

Description: A gamma-radiation telemetering system was utilized to measure fall-out levels at the Ncvada Test Site. Two methods of signal transmission were used: directcoupled field lines for on-site installations and commercial telephone lines for areas out to 330 miles. Graphic and tabular data cover on-site and off- site residual gamma-radiation dose rate measurements taken as a function of time after selected events. (auth)

EBR-II FUEL IRRADIATION FACILITIES

Description: Two irradiation facilities, designed for installation within tubular fuel elements, and peripheral experimental thimbles in the CP-5 reactor core are described. Both units are cooled internally by natural convection of D/sub 2/O and feature an inherent variable temperaturecontrol system which permits approximates plus or minus 75-degree central metal temperature variation for a given heat-transfer rate. Heat-transfer rates ranging from 10 tkw (fuel) to 15 tkw (thimble) are possible. External coā€¦ more

A Study of Complete Loss of Coolant Flow in the Yankee Reactor

Description: The complete loss of primary coolant flow accident caused by the instantaneous loss of power to all four pumps was investigated. The principal objective was to determine the elapsed time from the initiation of the pump failure to the occurrence of bulk boiling at the outlet of the hot channel. Inherent was the determination of operating conditions necessary to eliminate the hot channel bulk boiling, these being added inertia in the primary coolant loop and scram delay time. Equilibrium P-V-T Relations for Expanding Liquid-Vapor Systems in a Containment Shell

Description: From a time-independent standpoint, formulas are developed for determining a containment shell for a reactor plant should an unforeseen malfunction, where a compressed liquid, liquid-vapor, or vapor system is liberated and expands, occur. From the thermal equilibrium states, the pressure build-up inside a containment shell of known free volume is obtained, or for a specified containment shell pressure the required free volume is evolved. For the pressure build-up inside a containment shell due ā€¦ more

A GAMMA-RAY ATTENUATION METHOD FOR VOID FRACTION DETERMINATIONS IN EXPERIMENTAL BOILING HEAT TRANSFER TEST FACILITIES

Description: Gamma rays emanating from a radioactive source are beamed through and are attenuated by steam --water mixtures contained in a simulated reactor flow channel. The emergent radiation is detected by a scintillation crystalphotomultiplier tube assembly. An expression is developed which yields the void fraction when the detector output with the channel empty, filled with water, and containing the mixture in question is known. The principal sources of errors inherent in the method are analyzed and thā€¦ more
