Design considerations regarding slug ruptures in the intermediate power level reactor

Description: The minimum shutdown time, to permit accessibility, for the Intermediate Power Reactor is estimated to be 38 hours. In case the reactor were shutdown following each rupture this long shutdown period would have serious disadvantages. The desirability of being able to make firm power commitments (independent of slug ruptures) has led to a study of the possibility of continuous operation following a rupture. There is evidence to indicate that, at the proposed water temperature, the rate of corrosi… more

A General Purpose Log Counting Rate Meter Model B

Description: Abstract: This report is a brief description of a general purpose logarithmic counting rate meter developed at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. The theory of operation and the circuit design are discussed. The use of a diode as a logarithmic element in the integrating circuit allows extremely accurate counting rate determinations over a five decade range.

TURBULENT HEAT TRANSFER FROM A MOLTEN FLUORIDE SALT MIXTURE TO SODIUM- POTASSIUM ALLOY IN A DOUBLE-TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER

Description: Mixtures of fluoride salts were found to show promise for the circulating-fuel application. An experiment to measure the heat transfer characteristics of the fluoride salt mixture NaF-- ZrF/sub 4/-- UF/sub 4/ was performed. A correlation of film heat transfer coefficients and the effect on heat transfer of deposits resulting from corrosion or mass transfer of container materials are reported. (J.E.D.)

Design Study of Small Boiling Reactors for Power and Heat Production

Description: A design study has been made of a small "Package" nuclear power plant for the production of electric power and heat in remotely located, inaccessible areas devoid of natural fuels. The design utilizes a horizontal boiling reactor as a steam generator consistent with safe and simple equipment and a minimum building height. A reactor design of 51/2 Mw capacity, with a combined net electric power output of 750 kw and a heat plant output of 4500 kw, was studied in detail. Tertative cost estimates a… more

Experimental data for four full-scale conical cooling-air ejectors

Description: Report presenting an experimental investigation to determine the pumping and thrust characteristics of four full-scale conical air ejectors over a range of primary gas temperature. The spacing ratio was found to influence both ejector pumping and thrust performance. Results regarding the ejector performance and ejector-shroud wall pressure distribution are also provided.

Slowing-Down Distribution to Indium Resonance of Neutrons From a Ra-Alpha-Be Source in Water-Iron Mixtures

Description: Memorandum presenting the mean square slowing-down distance to indium resonance derived from the slowing-down distribution, which has been measured for water and for three water-iron mixtures for neutrons from a 0.1-gram source.

Electrodecontamination of Stainless Steel

Description: Abstract: "In experimental studies, decontamination factors of 1000 to 3000 were obtained by electrostripping deposited radioactivity from stainless steel surfaces, used as the anode, in 2% sulfuric acid at current densities as low as 0.01 amp/in.-2. Stainless steel cathodes were used. The method was successfully applied to contaminated equipment."

ZIRCONIUM CLADDING OF URANIUM

Description: Under proper conditions of vacuum and mold preheat, a sound ductile alloy bond can be achieved by casting molten uranium into zirconium and Zircaloy- 2 molds. Investigations indicate that a process for production of zirconium of Zircaloy-2 clad fuel elements can be developed by casting directly into preformed shells. Employment of cast bonding techniques appears to be a simple and practical method for assembling extrusion billets. It also appears that coextrusion of cast bonded normal uranium b… more

Monthly progress report for November 1954: Critical assembly research

Description: This report very briefly describes the status of a critical assembly project. Three items are reported. A study of counter response and spatial distribution of the flux from the assembly indicated a greater efficiency for 100 KeV neutrons than for 1-3 MeV neutrons for Hansen counters. An improved counter significantly increased the counting rate for the measurements of neutron emission from oralloy and tuballoy. Coding was begun for a one-group multiregion adjoint flux problem.
