Nuclear Battery-Thermocouple Type Summary Report

Description: The potential usefulness of approximately 1300 radioactive isotopes as a heat source for the thermoelectric generator was investigated. Only 47 were found to have the proper characteristics of high specific activity and usable haif-life combined with an easily absorbable radiation. These isotopes are discussed showing possible sources of supply, the hazards involved, and the expected performance. Three large Po/sup 210/ heat sources were designed and constructed (for battery use), including one… more

PRESSURE DROP EXPERIMENTS OF THE TITLE II FUEL ASSEMBLY FOR THE EXPERIMENTAL GAS COOLED REACTOR. SECTION III OF THE FUEL ASSEMBLY HEAT TRANSFER AND CHANNEL PRESSURE DROP EXPERIMENTS FOR THE EGCR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Description: Data are presented on the pressure drop tests of the Title II fuel assembly design modification and refinements as occurred during the Title II test phase. All tests were conducted with the chosen 3.000-in. ID fuel assembly sleeve and with the outer six tubes of the seven-tabe cluster located on a 2.000- in. dia bolt circle. The tests included two designs of spider support pieces and three designs of midlength spacers. The pressure loss data are presented in the form of velocity head coefficien… more

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis

Description: Biosynthesis begins with photosynthesis. Green plants and other photosynthetic organisms use the energy of absorbed visible light to make organic compounds from inorganic compounds. These organic compounds are the starting point for all other biosynthetic pathways. The products of photosynthesis provide not only the substrate material but also chemical energy for all subsequent biosynthesis. For example, nonphotosynthetic organisms making fats from sugars would first break down the sugars to sm… more

The Calculation of Transient Temperature Distributions in a Solid Cylindrical Pin, Cooled on the Surface

Description: The IBM-704 program RE-147 is used to calculate the time and space- dependent temperature distribution in a solid cylindrical fuel pin, cooled on the surface, with internal heat generation. The fuel pin may be bare or clad, and its boundary may be cooled by either flowing or staagnat coolant. The heat generatlon source may also be time and space dependent. Specifically, the program considers the fuel pin to be composed of two regions and then solves, by the usual finite difference methods, the … more

SLOP-1, A THERMAL MULTI-GROUP PROGRAM FOR THE IBM-704

Description: SLOP-I, a thermal multi-group program written for the IBM-704, is discussed. It was used extensively to test the utility of various H/sub 2/O scattering kernels, and to assess the accuracy of other computing methods. The problems solved by the code, the physical approximations in the program and library, the method of solution, and suggested modes of operation are described. Derivaticns of all basic equations and complete input and running instructions are included. (M.C.G.)

A Description of Thermal Conductivity and Dynamic Viscosity of Water in the Critcal Region

Description: A study to establish reasonable estimates of the values of thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of water in the critical region was conducted. This was accomplished by reviewing the literature and utilizing available experimental measurements. The validity of the estimates was strengthened by the use of the principle of corresponding states after other considerations failed to contribute a description of these two transport properties in the critical region. The final results were express… more

Primary Plant Self-Actuated Relief Valve Operation. Core I, Seed 1. Test Results T-641100-B. Section 1

Description: Tests were made to insure the reliable operation of the self-actuated pressurized steam relief valves and the selfactuated reactor water relief valves within the prescribed pressure settings. Of the six valves tested, four operated within the prescribed operating pressure limitations. Since the actual popping pressure of the other two valves was close to the prescribed operating pressure limitation, no adjustments were made. (W.L.H.)

STUDIES OF CORROSION BY MOLTEN ZINC AND CADMIUM SYSTEMS

Description: A corrosion program was undertaken in conjunction with development of pyrometallurgical processes employing liquid metal solvents as processing media. The metal solvents under consideration for uranium, plutonium, and thorium were zinc, cadmium, and magnesium, either alone or in various combinations with each other. The objective of the program was to find suitable container materials for the various liquid metal systems encountered. The corrosion program consisted of 100-hr static tests design… more

Nuclear Instrumentation Source Range Detectors. Core 1, Seed 2. Test Results T-641329

Description: A test was made to determine the effects of excessive neutron flux and humidity on various BF/sub 3/ detectors. Singleelement BF/sub 3/ detectors were installed in channels A, B, and C. A four-element detector was installed in channel D. Two of the four BF/sub 3/ tubes in channel D had their Kovar seals cut in onder to determine the effect of humidity. Of the two single-element BF/sub 3/ detectors installed in channels A and B and subjected to excessive neutron flux levels, the channelA detecto… more

The Scattering of Positrons by Atomic Hydrogen: Formulation

Description: The derivation of the coupled systems of second-order integrodifferential equations which must be solved numerically in order to obtain the cross sections for the elastic and inelastic scattering of positrons by atomic hydrogen and the cross sections for the formation of positronium into the 1s and 2s states is considered. The numerical method to be used to solve the equations at incident energies above excitation thresholds is also discussed. (auth)

ON THE PROBLEM OF LIQUID ENTRAINMENT

Description: THe problem of liquid entrainmment by a gas phase is considered with the purpose of gathering, presentinf, and correlating available information which may be useful for predicting the liquid carry-over in a boiling water reactor at high pressure. Correlations which predict water carryover as a function of pressure, of the height of the vapor dome, and of the vapor mass flow rate are presented and discussed. Because entrainment depends upon the hydrodynamic conditions and upon the expansion of a… more
